The best 10-day Slovakia route runs west to east: Bratislava, a middle-Slovakia stop, the High Tatras, Spiš and Košice, and a rental car from Auto Europe makes the middle legs far easier. This page is the slower, longer version of our 7-day itinerary.

Plan one-way pick-up and drop-off costs, vignette rules and mountain insurance before you travel.

Days 1 to 3: Bratislava and a castle stop

Spend two days in the capital using Bratislava in two days. If you land in Vienna, see Vienna Airport to Bratislava. Collect your rental car when you leave the city; see car rental in Bratislava. On day three, stop at Trenčín or Bojnice Castle.

Day 4: Banská Štiavnica

Drive to the mining town of Banská Štiavnica for an overnight stay. Walk the old town and the castles on foot. Check the route before you set off. See driving in Slovakia and the Slovakia vignette for road rules.

Days 5 to 7: High Tatras

Drive on to the mountains. Use one day for a lift and a lake, one for a longer hike and one as a weather reserve. Full plan: High Tatras in three days. For insurance, see hiking insurance for the High Tatras.

Day 8: Spiš

Visit Spiš Castle and Levoča on the way east. Allow a half day for the castle itself.

Days 9 to 10: Košice and departure

Finish in Košice. Hand in the car, and see car rental in Košice and one-way car rental for fees. Fly out from Košice: Košice Airport to the city centre. A day trip could include Slovak Paradise or caves in Slovakia.

Driving and booking notes

Book your car first, then fit hotels around it. A one-way rental from Bratislava to Košice may carry a drop-off fee, so compare before you commit. Read car rental insurance explained so you know what the base price covers. Pick up the car after the Bratislava days, since parking in the city is awkward; see parking in Bratislava. If you would rather not drive, the same route works by train, but Banská Štiavnica and Spiš need extra connections.

Seasonal changes

In summer, give the Tatras and Slovak Paradise more time. In winter, replace the middle driving legs with a ski stay; see Slovakia in winter and skiing in Slovakia. For the warm months, see Slovakia in summer. Check mobile data before you go with an eSIM for Slovakia.

Frequently asked questions

Is 10 days enough for Slovakia?

Yes, for a west-to-east route with a few stops.

Do I need a car?

A car helps between small towns and the Tatras, but trains work for Bratislava and Košice.

Where should I fly in and out?

Vienna or Bratislava in, Košice out, if the fares work.

Do I need a vignette?

Check the vignette rules on the official site before driving.

What is the best season?

Late spring to early autumn is easiest for a road trip.
