Airalo is a sound choice for a short Slovakia trip if you want a wide choice of eSIM plans and an app that handles installation. It sells data-only eSIMs for single countries, regions and the world, so you can buy a Slovakia plan or a Europe plan before you fly. Taply has not used the service; this review is based on Airalo's own terms and public sources.

Below: what Airalo is, how buying works, how refunds are described, what reviewers commonly say, and who should look at another option.

Top picks at a glance

Key takeaways

  • Airalo sells data eSIMs, not a local phone number, on most plans.
  • It was founded in 2019 and says it serves millions of travellers.
  • Check the refund rules: used or activated eSIMs are generally not refundable.
  • For stays of several weeks, a local prepaid SIM may cost less.

What Airalo is

Airalo is an eSIM marketplace. Per Wikipedia, it was founded in 2019, has legal roots in Delaware and an operational base in Singapore, and reports more than 20 million users as of mid 2025. It does not run its own mobile network. It resells data from local carriers, which is why coverage in Slovakia depends on the partner network named on the plan page.

The same model applies to most eSIM brands, and it is why a Slovakia plan and a Europe plan can behave differently. See eSIM for Slovakia for the single-country case.

How buying and setup work

  1. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked.
  2. Pick a Slovakia plan or a Europe regional plan in the Airalo app or on the site.
  3. Pay, then install the eSIM using the in-app steps or a QR code, ideally on Wi-Fi before you leave.
  4. On arrival, switch on the eSIM line and enable data roaming for it.

Most plans are data-only. Calls and texts come from your normal SIM or from apps like WhatsApp. If you need a local number, look at a Slovak prepaid SIM or a provider that sells virtual numbers.

Pricing, validity and refunds

Airalo plans are sold as fixed data bundles with a validity period, with many lasting 30 days and others ranging from about a week to a year, according to third-party reviews. Prices change, so compare the current bundle sizes before buying.

On refunds, Airalo's terms say a consumer can withdraw from a purchase within 14 days, but the right ends when the eSIM is activated. Expired or fully used eSIMs are not eligible. Read the current terms on Airalo's site before you pay, because refund rules differ by case and region.

What users commonly say

At the time of writing, reviews on Trustpilot and comparison sites tend to praise the easy install and the range of countries. Common complaints in public reviews include slow speeds on some plans, plans that run out sooner than expected on heavy data use, and slow support replies. Treat any single rating as a snapshot and check the current Trustpilot page yourself.

Who Airalo suits for Slovakia

Airalo fits a one- or two-week trip to Bratislava, the Tatras or a multi-country route through Vienna or Budapest, especially if you want to top up. For heavy video or hotspot use, an unlimited plan from a provider such as Saily may fit better. For more than a few weeks, compare a local SIM. Our best eSIM for Europe and Airalo vs Saily guides give side-by-side context.

Roaming inside the EU is usually included in Slovak and EU plans, so travellers with an EU SIM may not need an eSIM at all. Check your home plan first. See also internet and Wi-Fi in Slovakia.
