eSIM data calculator: how many GB do you need?
This calculator estimates how many gigabytes of mobile data your trip needs and suggests an eSIM plan size, with a 20% safety buffer. Enter your trip length and how many hours a day you use each type of app.
The figures are typical consumption estimates and vary by app and phone settings, so treat the result as a guide, not a guarantee.
How the estimate works
The calculator multiplies the hours you enter by a typical data rate for each activity, adds a small allowance for background syncing, and totals it for your trip. It then adds a 20% buffer and picks the smallest plan size that covers it: 1, 3, 5, 10 or 20 GB. Above 20 GB it suggests an unlimited or very large plan.
The typical rates we use are: standard-definition video about 0.7 GB an hour, HD video about 1.5 to 3 GB an hour, video calls about 0.5 to 1.5 GB an hour, music streaming about 70 to 150 MB an hour, social media about 100 to 700 MB an hour, and maps about 5 to 20 MB an hour.
Why real use can differ
Apps adjust quality to your connection, so the same hour of video can use half as much on a weak signal. Social apps that autoplay video use far more than text feeds. Downloaded offline maps, playlists and shows use no data at all while you travel, which is the simplest way to cut your total.
Phone updates, cloud photo backups and app downloads can also use gigabytes without you noticing. Turn those to Wi-Fi only before you leave.
Slovakia, EU roaming and eSIMs
Slovakia is in the EU, so a SIM or eSIM from an EU operator normally works at your home rates under EU roaming rules. Check the fair use limit in your plan, because heavy data use abroad can be capped or charged. If you come from outside the EU, a travel eSIM is usually simpler and cheaper than your home roaming package.

Tips to make your data last
- Download offline maps for Bratislava and the High Tatras before you go, as mountain coverage can be patchy.
- Use hotel, cafe and train Wi-Fi for large downloads and video.
- Set video streaming to standard quality on mobile data.
- Check whether your plan is a fixed number of days or data, since both can run out.
- If you use your phone as a hotspot for a laptop, count that time separately, as laptops use data faster than phones.
Choosing between plan sizes
Small plans of 1 to 3 GB suit short stays where you mostly use messaging, maps and the odd photo upload, and where hotels and cafes offer Wi-Fi. A 5 to 10 GB plan fits a week or two of regular social media, some music and occasional video. Plans of 20 GB and above, or unlimited plans, are for people who stream video daily, work online or share a connection with a laptop or other travellers.
Many eSIM providers let you top up if you run short, so you do not have to buy the largest size to be safe. Compare the price per gigabyte, the validity period and whether the plan covers Slovakia and neighbouring countries if you plan to cross the border to Vienna, Budapest or Prague. Check the provider's own coverage list before you buy, because prices and networks change.
Remember that the plan size is a total for the trip, not per day. Use the trip total shown above, not the daily figure, when you compare plans.
Questions
How much data do I need for a week in Slovakia?
A light user who relies on maps, messaging and some social media often fits within 3 to 5 GB a week. Regular video or hotspot use can push you to 10 GB or more. Enter your own habits above for a better estimate.
Does Slovakia have good mobile coverage?
Coverage is good in towns, along main roads and in Bratislava. Remote mountain areas in the High Tatras and valleys can have gaps, so download offline maps.
Will my EU SIM work in Slovakia?
Yes, EU roaming rules let you use your plan in Slovakia at home rates, subject to your operator's fair use policy. Check your contract for the limit.
Is unlimited data really unlimited?
Often not. Many unlimited travel plans slow down after a fair use threshold, so read the plan details.
Why is my result a range?
Usage depends on app, quality and signal. The range shows a low and high case around the typical figure.
