Slovakia packing list generator

This tool builds a packing checklist for Slovakia based on the month you travel, your trip type and how many days you stay. Choose a city break in Bratislava, High Tatras hiking, skiing, a spa trip or a road trip, then tick items off and print the list.

It includes Slovakia-specific items such as plug type, euros, mountain rescue numbers and a vignette for driving.

What the list covers

The checklist is split into documents and money, clothes, gear, tech and electricals, and health. Quantities of clothes scale with the length of your trip but stop at about a week, since you can wash clothes on longer stays. The items change with the season and trip type, so a January ski trip and an October city break give very different lists.

Slovakia essentials

  • Plugs and power: Slovakia uses type C and E sockets at 230 V and 50 Hz.
  • Money: the currency is the euro. Cards are widely accepted, but bring some cash for mountain huts, small shops and tips.
  • Documents: EU citizens can travel with a valid ID card, other visitors need a passport. Check entry rules for your nationality.
  • Emergencies: 112 works for any emergency. In the mountains the rescue service (HZS) number is 18 300.
  • Driving: motorways and expressways need an electronic vignette. See our vignette guide.

Mountain weather

Weather in the High Tatras changes fast. A warm valley can be cold, windy or wet on the ridge, so layers matter more than any single heavy item. Pack a base layer, fleece and waterproof shell, plus a hat and gloves even in summer. Snow can lie on higher trails well into early summer, and some trails above the mountain huts have a seasonal closure, so check the park rules before you plan a route.

Spas, city breaks and kids

For thermal spas, pack a swimsuit, sandals and a light layer, and check the spa rules on caps and towels. For Bratislava, comfortable shoes matter because the Old Town has cobblestones. If you travel with children, add documents, a car seat if you drive, and snacks. See our guides to thermal spas in Slovakia and Bratislava with kids.

Tips for packing smart

Lay out everything on your list before it goes in the bag, then remove a quarter of the clothes. Slovakia has laundrettes and most apartments and many guesthouses have a washing machine, so you rarely need more than a week of clothes. Wear your bulkiest shoes on the plane to save space.

Keep passports, cards, medicines, a charger and one change of clothes in your hand luggage. If you hike or ski, check whether you can rent bulky items locally, such as helmets, poles or ski boots, instead of carrying them. Pack a small bag for day trips so you can leave the main luggage at your hotel. If you need somewhere to leave bags between check-out and a late train, see our guide to luggage storage in Bratislava.

Finally, check the forecast a few days before you leave and swap items if needed. The generator gives a solid starting point, but you know your own habits best.

The mountain rescue service (HZS) can be reached on 18 300. The general emergency number 112 also works across the EU.

What should I wear in the High Tatras?
