Belianska Cave is the only cave in the Slovak High Tatras open to visitors, a stalactite cave above Tatranská Kotlina with a guided tour of about 70 minutes along a 1,370 m path. Taply ranks a Kiwitaxi transfer first for the approach, since the cave is reached by a 25 minute uphill walk from the village and a timed arrival at the car park keeps the day simple.
The cave was known in the 18th century, opened to visitors in 1884 and was electrically lit in 1896. Its surveyed length is around 3.8 km, and the show path climbs and descends through domes, halls and flowstone waterfalls, including the Musical Hall. The temperature stays between 5.0 and 6.3 °C all year, so it is a useful option on a hot or rainy Tatra day.
This guide covers the tour, how to get there, what to bring and where it fits among Slovak caves. For other caves, see caves in Slovakia.

What the tour is like
The guided tour covers a 1,370 m show path with an elevation range of 125 m and about 860 steps. It takes around 70 minutes. The route runs through halls, domes and flowstone waterfalls, with ascents and descents rather than a flat walk. The cave temperature stays between 5.0 and 6.3 °C with humidity of 90 to 97 percent, so bring a jumper or jacket even in July.
The operator advises that the tour involves a longer walk in darkness, cold, damp air and stairs. People with heart or breathing problems, high blood pressure, mobility limits or poor fitness should consider whether it suits them. Animals, including dogs, are not allowed inside.
Tour times and tickets
At the time of writing, the operator lists set tour times of 9:30, 11:00, 12:30 and 14:00 when visitor numbers are low, with extra tours added when it is busy. Reservations are not accepted, so you queue on arrival. Seasons, opening days and prices change, so check ssj.sk for the current schedule and price list. Children aged 4 to 15 get a reduced ticket, and a baby carrier is advised for very small children because of the stairs.

How to get there
The cave lies above Tatranská Kotlina, a settlement belonging to the town of Vysoké Tatry, at an entrance elevation of about 890 m. The closest public transport stop is Tatranská Kotlina. From the village an educational trail of 1 km with a climb of 122 m leads to the entrance, and the walk takes around 25 minutes. Add that time to your plan so you arrive before your chosen tour.
By road, the area is a short drive from Tatranská Lomnica and the Spiš towns. See Poprad airport to the High Tatras for airport links.
When to go
The cave suits rainy days and hot afternoons, but weekends and holiday periods bring long queues. Go for the first tour of the day. Winter and shoulder-season hours may differ, and the approach trail can be icy, so check before travelling.
The cave works well with other Tatra stops. Combine it with High Tatras with kids ideas or a morning at Tatranská Lomnica.
Belianska compared with other caves
Belianska is the Tatras' only show cave, but Slovakia has many others. The Demänovská caves are in the Low Tatras, and Dobšinská Ice Cave is in Slovak Paradise. Compare the options in Demänovská caves and caves in Slovakia before choosing.
What to wear and bring
Dress for a cold cellar, not a summer street. A fleece or light jacket, closed shoes with grip and long trousers are the sensible baseline, because the path has wet patches and 860 steps. Gloves are not essential but welcome if you feel the cold. Bring a small bag, avoid bulky rucksacks and keep your hands free for the handrails. A baby carrier works better than a pushchair, which cannot use the stairs.
Photography rules and fees can change. The operator has waived photo and video fees for regular tours from 1 January 2026, but check its site before the visit. Also bring cash for tickets and snacks, since the operator itself recommends a cash reserve in case card terminals fail.
For families, the main question is the stairs. The tour has ascents and descents rather than a flat route, and younger children may tire before the end. Take a break on the climb from the village, set the pace for the youngest walker and keep a snack for afterwards. On busy days the group is large, so the guide's explanations may be hard to hear from the back. Stay near the front if you want the story of the cave, which includes its early exploration, the electric lighting added in the 1890s and the stalactite formations that give the halls their character.
If you arrive early and the first tours are full, use the waiting time to walk the educational trail and visit the village. Public transport to the village is limited, so check the return bus time before you enter the cave. Taxis and transfers can also be arranged for the way back if the timetable does not suit you.
Pairing the cave with other Tatra stops
The cave fits a half day. Arrive for the first tour, finish by midday and use the afternoon for another easy stop. Tatranská Lomnica offers lifts and viewpoints, Kežmarok has a castle and old town, and the Spiš region has more heritage sights. If rain is forecast, use the cave as the main activity and keep the lifts for a clearer day.
For a wider plan, where to stay in the High Tatras compares the resorts, and Košice to the High Tatras shows how to arrive from the east. Cave fans can then continue to Dobšinská Ice Cave on another day.
