Jasná is Slovakia's biggest ski resort and also a strong summer base, and the easiest way to reach it from an airport or city is a Kiwitaxi private transfer. Taply ranks that first, since the resort sits in the Demänovská valley near Liptovský Mikuláš and public connections involve a change.

The resort lies on the northern side of Chopok, a peak of about 2,024 metres in the Low Tatras. The mountains are rounder and less rocky than the High Tatras, which makes them friendly for walkers and families.

This page covers the season, getting there, and what to do nearby.

Skiing at Jasná

Jasná offers a large network of slopes on both sides of Chopok, with lifts for different levels. The season usually runs from December to March, and snow cover depends on the year. Check the resort website for current lift and snow information. See also skiing in Slovakia for other areas.

Summer in the Low Tatras

When the snow melts, lifts carry hikers and mountain bikers to higher ground. Chopok is the main target, and ridge walks have a gentler profile than the High Tatras. Marked trails go along the main ridge. Check seasonal trail rules in the Low Tatras National Park (NAPANT) before you go.

Caves and rainy-day options

The Demänovská Cave of Freedom and the Demänovská Ice Cave are among the best-known caves in Slovakia. Opening dates and tour times vary by season, so check ahead. For other underground sights see caves in Slovakia.

Where to stay

Hotels and apartments are spread along the Demänovská valley, with the largest concentration near the lifts. Liptovský Mikuláš has more budget choices and shops. Prices are highest at Christmas, New Year and in February.

Combine with the High Tatras

The High Tatras are about an hour or so away by car, which makes it easy to ski both areas on one trip. See the High Tatras guide and High Tatras in winter.

Practical tips for a visit

Jasná is a large resort, so pick accommodation close to the lifts if you plan to ski every day. In summer, bring layers, because the weather on the ridge is cooler and windier than in the valley. Check the lift operator for current opening times and prices, since they change with the season and with maintenance.

If you visit in shoulder seasons, some lifts and services may be closed, so check before you travel.

Driving and parking

Roads into the Demänovská valley are generally easy to drive, but winter conditions need care and appropriate tyres. Parking near the main lifts fills up on peak days, so arrive early. For driving rules and tips, read driving in Slovakia and car rental in Slovakia.
