What Liptovský Mikuláš is
The town was first mentioned in a royal deed of King Ladislaus IV in 1286. It grew as a crafts centre with guilds and played a role in the Slovak national revival of the 19th century. Today it is a regional centre with museums and a pedestrian centre, and it is the hometown of the skier Petra Vlhová.
Liptovská Mara
Liptovská Mara is a reservoir on the Váh river near the town. It covers 22 square kilometres, has a maximum depth of 45 m and holds 360 million cubic metres of water. Construction ran from 1965 to 1975, and thirteen villages were flooded. Its main purpose is flood control, and it also produces electricity. Today it is a place for swimming, sailing and walks. Havránok, a reconstructed Celtic oppidum, stands on a hill above the dam.
Caves, Jasná and the Low Tatras
The Demänovská valley is a short trip from town. It holds two show caves, see Demänovská caves, and the Jasná ski resort, see Jasná and the Low Tatras. For travel from Bratislava see Bratislava to Jasná. Wider cave options are listed in caves in Slovakia.
Tatralandia and family days
Aquapark Tatralandia opened in 2004 near the town and is a bad-weather option for families. Check current opening times and prices on the park site. For other water parks, see aquaparks in Slovakia.
Seasons
Winter brings skiing in Jasná. Summer suits the reservoir, hiking and caves. Autumn is quiet and clear. In Tatra National Park many higher trails are closed from 1 November to 15 June, and the same TANAP rules apply if you cross into the High Tatras. Check the park website before any hike.
Combining with the High Tatras
Poprad and the High Tatras lie east of the town, see Poprad and High Tatras. The Low Tatras and High Tatras can share one itinerary, as in our 7-day Slovakia itinerary.
