Sunrise and Sunset Times in Slovakia: Daylight Calculator
This calculator shows sunrise, sunset, day length and civil twilight for ten places in Slovakia on any date, in local Bratislava time (CET or CEST). Use it to plan hikes so you are back down before dark.
Enter how many hours your walk takes and it also gives you the latest sensible start time.
How the times are calculated
The calculator uses the NOAA solar position equations. For each date it works out the sun’s declination and the equation of time, then solves for the moment the centre of the sun is 90.833 degrees from straight overhead, which accounts for atmospheric refraction and the sun’s radius. That moment is sunrise or sunset. Civil twilight uses 96 degrees and marks the time when the sun is 6 degrees below the horizon, roughly when you can still see well outdoors without artificial light.
The results are converted to Europe/Bratislava time: CET (UTC+1) in winter and CEST (UTC+2) from the last Sunday of March to the last Sunday of October, using the European Union rules. The result typically matches published tables within a minute or two.
Why this matters on a hike
Day length in Slovakia swings from about 8 hours and 20 minutes in late December to just over 16 hours in late June. In autumn the sun sets before 17:00 after the clocks change in late October. Mountain trails take longer on the way down than most people expect, and paths are hard to follow in the dark. Plan to be at your hut, lift station or car with half an hour to spare.
A simple routine: look up sunset, subtract your walking time, add your breaks and leave a margin. The optional field above does the first half for you. Read hiking in Slovakia for beginners and best hikes in the High Tatras for realistic walking times.
Limits of the calculation
Times assume a flat horizon at sea level. In a narrow valley or under a high ridge, direct sun can vanish an hour earlier than the table, and twilight arrives sooner. On a summit such as Lomnický štít you see the sun somewhat earlier in the morning and later in the evening than the table says, and the horizon dip is not applied. Weather and cloud change how dark it feels. The coordinates are the town centre or the named point, and nearby places differ by a minute or two.
Tips for planning
- Set your turnaround time before you start, and keep to it.
- Carry a head torch even on a day hike. A phone torch is a poor substitute.
- After the clocks change in October, the evening gets dark an hour earlier by the clock, so re-check your plan.
- In winter, plan routes with a loop or lift option back down.
- Check the forecast and the seasonal trail rules; see the High Tatras trail season checker.
Daylight through the year
For a rough idea of the seasons in Bratislava: around the winter solstice the sun rises about 07:40 and sets about 16:00, giving a little over 8 hours of daylight. Around the summer solstice it rises about 04:50 and sets about 20:55, a day of about 16 hours. The two equinoxes in March and September give roughly 12 hours. The eastern end of the country sees the sun earlier, by about 20 minutes in Košice compared with Bratislava.
The clock change matters too. On the last Sunday of March the clocks move forward, so a sunset that was at 18:15 appears at 19:15. On the last Sunday of October they move back and sunset jumps from after 17:45 to before 17:00 the following day. Hikers often get caught out in the weeks after the autumn change, when it feels as though the afternoon vanishes. Slovak weather in the mountains is also less predictable in October, so take extra layers.
Questions
What time is sunrise in Bratislava on the longest day?
Around 04:50 local time on 21 June, with sunset near 20:55 CEST. The tool gives the exact minute for any date.
Which time zone are the results in?
Local Slovak time, CET (UTC+1) in winter and CEST (UTC+2) from the last Sunday of March to the last Sunday of October.
What is civil twilight?
The period when the sun is up to 6 degrees below the horizon. There is still enough light to see clearly outdoors, but it fades quickly.
Is the sunset earlier in the mountains?
Yes. High ridges block the low sun, so valleys and slopes can be in shade well before the calculated sunset.
How accurate is the calculation?
The method is accurate to about a minute in Slovakia under normal conditions. Terrain and weather matter more than the maths.
Is sunrise earlier in the east of Slovakia?
Košice has sunrise roughly 20 minutes earlier than Bratislava because it lies further east.
