Slovakia vignette helper

This free helper tells you which Slovak electronic vignette (1, 10, 30 or 365 days) covers your trip, the date it ends and which motorways and expressways on your route need it.

Enter your vehicle, the first day you will use tolled roads and how many calendar days your use spans, then tick the roads on your route.

Vignette types and how validity is counted

Passenger cars, vans and campers up to 3.5 tonnes can buy a 1-day, 10-day, 30-day or 365-day electronic vignette on the official site, eznamka.sk. The vignette is tied to your licence plate and country, so there is no sticker. For the 10, 30 and 365-day types, the day you choose is the first day and it is included, so a 10-day vignette starting on 20 October ends at the end of 29 October. A 1-day vignette is valid on the chosen day only, until 23:59:59.

The helper picks the shortest type that covers the span between your first and last day on tolled roads. If you only use motorways on two separate days within a week, two 1-day vignettes may suit you better than one 10-day, so compare them on the official site.

Which roads need it

The vignette applies to the designated sections of motorways (D) and expressways (R). The official network on eznamka.sk lists, among others, parts of D1, D2, D3, D4, R1, R2, R3, R4, R6 and R7. The list on the site is indicative, and some sections are free of charge or temporarily excluded, so check the official network page for your exact stretch. Ordinary roads (class I, II and III) do not need a vignette.

The official site states that passenger cars can use the whole Bratislava D4 outer bypass free of charge. The short D4 link at the Austrian border near Jarovce is listed as a tolled section, so the helper includes it as such.

Where to buy and what to check

Buy at eznamka.sk, in the official app or at a staffed seller. Enter the plate exactly, because a typo means you have no valid vignette. Choose the start date carefully and keep the confirmation. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes use a different distance-based toll instead of the vignette.

Prices are not shown here because they can change. Check the current price for your vehicle on eznamka.sk before you buy.

A worked example

You land in Bratislava on 20 October, drive the D1 to the High Tatras, spend four days hiking and drive back on the D1 on 25 October. Your first day on tolled roads is 20 October and your last is 25 October, a span of 6 calendar days. The helper recommends the 10-day vignette, valid from 20 October to the end of 29 October. If you only needed the D1 on the outward and return days, two 1-day vignettes are the other option to compare.

A longer holiday that spans three weeks needs the 30-day type, and a vignette bought in December can also cover part of January, as the official site notes. For repeat visitors who drive in Slovakia several times a year, the 365-day type can be simpler than buying again each trip.

Rental cars

Policies differ by supplier and by pick-up country, so never assume a vignette is included, especially if you pick the car up in Vienna, Budapest or Prague. Ask your supplier whether a Slovak vignette is included and ask for written confirmation. If it is not, you can buy it yourself using the car's plate before you cross the border.

Limits of this tool

The helper is a guide based on the information published on eznamka.sk and does not replace it. Rules, sections and prices can change. Use the official site for the final decision and the purchase.

Questions

Do I need a vignette to drive in Bratislava?

Only on tolled sections. Many city roads and the D4 outer bypass for cars are free, but check your exact route on the official network page.

Is the start day included in the validity?

Yes. The day you choose is the first day of validity and counts as one of the days.

Can I buy it at the border?

Yes, staffed points of sale and the official app work, but buying online beforehand avoids queues and mistakes.

What if I enter the wrong plate?

The vignette is tied to the plate, so a wrong plate means no valid vignette. Check it before you pay.

Do motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes need the vignette?

No. They use the distance-based electronic toll for heavy vehicles instead.
