High Tatras Trail Season Checker: Is the Winter Closure On?
This checker tells you whether the seasonal closure of High Tatras hiking trails above the mountain huts, which runs from 1 November to 15 June, applies on the date you choose. It also lists the kinds of walks that are usually still possible.
It is a quick guide to the rule, not an official notice. Always check tanap.sk before you go.
What the seasonal closure covers
Every year the High Tatras national park (TANAP) closes a large part of the marked trails for the winter. The closure applies from 1 November to 15 June and concerns the higher parts of the mountains: trails that climb above the mountain huts to saddles, ridges and peaks. The aim is to protect wildlife and fragile alpine ground and to keep people away from the most dangerous winter terrain.
Trails to most of the huts, and the valley paths, stay open all year. There are exceptions on both sides, and the exact list of open and closed sections is published by TANAP and can change from year to year.
Which walks are usually still possible
During the closure you can still do many shorter walks.
- Popradské pleso: the walk from Štrbské Pleso to the lake and its hut is a classic winter and spring outing. See Popradské pleso.
- Hrebienok: a short walk above Starý Smokovec towards the Studenovodské waterfalls. See Hrebienok and the Studenovodské waterfalls.
- Štrbské Pleso: the flat path around the lake and short forest walks nearby. See Štrbské Pleso.
- Tatranská Lomnica and Starý Smokovec: forest paths and viewpoints close to the resorts, plus cable cars and funiculars on their winter timetables.

Dates near the change
The closure ends after 15 June, so 16 June is the first day the trails are open. In practice snow can lie on high trails into July after a snowy winter, and some sections can stay closed for safety reasons. In autumn, early snow can arrive before 1 November. A date inside the open season is therefore permission, not a promise of good conditions.
Safety notes
Mountain weather changes fast, and it is much colder and windier on the ridges than in the valley. Check the forecast the evening before and again in the morning, start early and turn around if clouds build. In winter and spring carry spikes or microspikes for icy paths, plus warm clothing, water, a rain layer and a charged phone with a power bank.
The mountain rescue service (HZS) can be reached on 18 300. The European emergency number 112 also works across Slovakia. Tell someone your route and your planned return time.
Method and limits
The checker applies one rule: closed from 1 November to 15 June inclusive, open from 16 June to 31 October. It does not know about avalanche warnings, local closures, repairs, hut opening dates or snow on a given day. Rules for individual trails differ, and a few exceptions exist. Treat the result as a first filter and confirm the details with TANAP (tanap.sk), the national park information centres and your accommodation. For route planning read best hikes in the High Tatras.
Planning around the closure
Most visitors who come between November and mid-June can still have a good mountain day if they pick the right target. In winter the resorts around Štrbské Pleso, Starý Smokovec and Tatranská Lomnica are busy with skiers and walkers, and the lower paths are usually trodden down. In spring the snow melts from the bottom up, so the valley paths are wet and muddy while the top is still white. That is the time to choose a lake or waterfall rather than a summit.
If your dates fall inside the closure and your plan was a high summit, you have three options: move the trip to the open season, switch to a hut or valley walk, or ride a cable car for the view. See High Tatras cable cars for lifts and where to stay in the High Tatras for a base.
Fines can apply for leaving a marked trail in a national park, and rescue in closed terrain is not guaranteed to be covered by your insurance. Read your policy wording before you set out. See hiking insurance for the High Tatras.
Questions
When is the High Tatras winter closure?
The seasonal closure of marked trails above the mountain huts runs from 1 November to 15 June. It is set by TANAP, so confirm the current notice on tanap.sk.
Are all hiking trails in the Tatras closed in winter?
No. Valley trails and most trails to the mountain huts stay open. The closure applies mainly to routes above the huts, to saddles, ridges and summits.
Can I climb Rysy in winter or spring?
Rysy is above the huts and the standard route falls under the seasonal closure. Outside the open season it needs winter mountaineering skills and equipment, and it can be dangerous. Check TANAP and consider a guide.
Does open season mean there is no snow?
No. Snow can remain on high trails into July and return in October. Check conditions and take proper footwear.
What is the mountain rescue number?
Call the mountain rescue service (HZS) on 18 300, or 112 for the general European emergency number.
Does the closure apply in the Low Tatras too?
The Low Tatras have a separate and smaller seasonal closure with its own dates. Check the park administration for the exact rules.
