Slovakia has four mobile brands that sell prepaid SIMs: Orange, Slovak Telekom, O2 and the value brand 4ka. A prepaid SIM works well for stays of several weeks, but for a short trip a travel eSIM such as Drimsim or Airalo saves the trip to a shop.
Third-party guides report that SIM cards cost only a few euros and that 10 GB bundles cost about 10 to 15 EUR, but offers change often, so check at the shop or on each operator's site. Registration with ID is required, so bring your passport.
Below: how registration works, how the four networks compare, what to ask at the counter and when a SIM is the wrong choice.

Which operator should you choose?
Orange, Telekom and O2 have the widest coverage. 4ka is cheaper but weaker in rural areas, so avoid it for mountain trips. In the Opensignal report for February 2026, Slovak Telekom had the highest 5G availability and 4ka the lowest. Operators and trade reports also cite 5G reaching most of the population, around 99 percent for Slovak Telekom and 92 percent for O2, though coverage inside a building or valley is another matter. If you plan to hike in the High Tatras, download offline maps in any case.
Operators at a glance
| Operator | Reputation | Best for | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slovak Telekom | Highest 5G availability in Opensignal, February 2026 | Travel outside cities | Shop visit, passport |
| Orange | Wide coverage | General use | Shop visit, passport |
| O2 | Wide coverage, large 5G rollout | General use | Shop visit, passport |
| 4ka | Cheapest, lowest 5G availability | Cities, budget | Non-citizens activate in a store |
Registration and ID
Third-party SIM guides report that all four operators ask for a passport or national ID when you buy a prepaid SIM in person, and registration usually takes 5 to 10 minutes at a shop. Online registration exists for some operators but is not instant. For 4ka, guides report that non-Slovak citizens must activate in a store with an ID card or passport. Rules can change, so confirm at the counter.
Where to buy
Buy in operator shops in towns and shopping centres. Airport kiosks may charge more. Bring your passport. If you land late, an eSIM installed before you fly avoids the problem. See Bratislava airport to city centre for what to do after landing.
Questions to ask at the counter
- Does the bundle include data usable in other EU countries, or only in Slovakia?
- How many days is the data valid, and does it roll over?
- Does the SIM use 4G or 5G?
- How do I top up later, in the app or in a shop?
- Is tethering allowed?
Top up and keep a number
Prepaid credit and data bundles are added with top-ups at shops, in operator apps or online. A local number helps with taxis, restaurant bookings and delivery confirmations. Slovak numbers use the country code +421.
Who should skip a local SIM
Skip a local SIM if you stay under a week, arrive late at night, or only need data for maps and messaging. The shop visit, the ID registration and the leftover credit rarely pay off. Also skip it if you live in the EU, because your home plan works under EU roaming rules within fair-use limits. A local SIM is worth the effort for stays of several weeks, remote work, or when you need a Slovak number for bookings and deliveries. If you rent a car and cross borders, ask the operator whether the data bundle works outside Slovakia. See car rental in Slovakia.
eSIM or SIM?
An eSIM is easier for short trips; a local SIM is better for long stays, or when you need a local number. For a few days the time spent in a shop often costs more than it saves. Compare in eSIM Slovakia, best eSIM for Europe and Airalo vs Saily. For Wi-Fi see internet and Wi-Fi in Slovakia.
Plans and prices change often, so check the current size, validity and network on the provider's site before buying.
