Slovakia in spring is best for cities, castles and towns: Bratislava averages a 17.5 °C high in April and 21.7 °C in May, while the High Tatras stay wintry, with the highest trails closed until 15 June. Taply's top pick for a spring trip is a tour or day trip from Klook, because a guided day to a castle, caves or a wine village avoids the transport planning that is harder outside peak season.

Spring is cheaper and quieter than summer, but the country splits in two: the lowlands warm up quickly while the mountains hold snow and mud. Choose a plan with a city and low-level sights, and leave summits for summer.

Top picks at a glance

Key takeaways

  • Lowland cities are mild by April; the mountains stay cold into May.
  • High mountain trails close from 1 November to 15 June, check TANAP for exact dates.
  • Easter has public holidays and local customs that affect hours.
  • Rain rises in May, so carry a waterproof layer.
  • Spring is quiet and cheaper than summer, with fewer seasonal services in March.

What the weather is like

Long-term averages (1991 to 2020 normals) for three places that cover most trips: Bratislava in the south-west, Poprad at the foot of the Tatras and Košice in the east. Averages are not a forecast, and a single day can be far colder or warmer.

Where to go in spring

What is open and closed

Cities, museums and main sights are open all spring. Seasonal places change: many castles, caves and outdoor attractions start their main season in April or May, and some run shorter hours or limited days early on, so check each site's own page for your date. In the mountains, higher trails are closed until 15 June (check TANAP for exact dates), cable cars take maintenance breaks, and some huts and seasonal businesses are not yet open. See High Tatras in spring for the details.

Easter matters. Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays, and Easter Monday has a traditional custom in villages and families in which boys sprinkle or lightly whip girls for good luck. 1 May and 8 May are holidays too, so shops and trains follow holiday patterns. See Slovakia public holidays.

Mountains and hiking in spring

Snow lingers at altitude into early summer. In the High Tatras, Štrbské Pleso averages only 3.0 °C in March and 13.4 °C in May, and the highest trails stay closed. Lower-altitude parks are better choices in spring, for example Slovak Paradise, Malá Fatra and Suchá Belá gorge, but gorges with ladders and chains can be closed or flooded in spring melt, so check each one. See hiking in Slovakia for beginners and hiking insurance.

Crowds and prices

March and April are the quietest months, and hotels in the cities and mountain resorts are easiest to book. May weekends and the Easter holidays are busier. Spring is generally cheaper than summer, but compare dates yourself. For budgets see Slovakia travel cost.

What to pack

  • Layers, since the day-to-night range is about ten degrees.
  • A waterproof jacket and compact umbrella.
  • Waterproof walking shoes for mud and wet cobbles.
  • Warm hat and gloves if you will visit the mountains.
  • Sunglasses and sun cream from May.

See the Slovakia packing list.

A simple spring route

A seven-day spring trip can combine three days in Bratislava, a day in a wine village or castle, and a train east to the Tatras foothills for low walks and old towns. Trains run all year, see trains in Slovakia, and the full plan is in a 7 day itinerary. Compare with Slovakia in summer and autumn before you fix dates, and see the best time to visit Slovakia.

Common spring mistakes

  • Booking a high hike for April or May. The routes are closed and snow remains.
  • Expecting every castle and cave to be open daily. Seasonal schedules vary, so check ahead.
  • Ignoring Easter. Public holidays change opening hours and fill trains.
  • Packing for the cities only. The same week can be 20 °C in Bratislava and near freezing at night in Poprad.
  • Driving into the mountains without checking road conditions. See driving in Slovakia.

Getting around

Trains link the main cities and run through the spring, see how to buy train tickets. For castles and smaller towns a car is flexible, see car rental in Slovakia, but without one you can still manage many towns by train and bus, see castles in Slovakia without a car. If you arrive by air, see airports in Slovakia.

Month by month

MonthWhat it is likeBest for
MarchCold mornings, bare trees, snow in the mountains, quiet sightsMuseums, spas, city breaks
AprilMild in the cities, first terraces, showersOld towns, castles opening, wine bars
MayWarm lowlands, green countryside, more rainWalking, cycling, parks, gorges at lower height

If you can choose, May gives the best balance for a mixed trip, and April suits those who value quiet. Mountain hiking improves from late June, see High Tatras in summer.

Who spring suits

Spring suits city and culture trips, couples and travellers on a budget, as well as anyone who dislikes heat and crowds. It is a weaker choice for high peaks, river swimming and long open-air evenings, which belong to summer. Solo travellers will find the cities easy, see Slovakia for solo travellers, and the cycling routes along the Danube open up from April, see Danube cycle path.
