Slovakia road trip optimizer
This tool takes your start city and up to 10 places in Slovakia and puts them in the order with the least total distance, for a round trip or a one-way drive. It shows total kilometres, a rough road estimate, a suggested number of days and a Google Maps driving link.
The first figure is a straight line. The road figure is an estimate, so check the final route in a navigation app.
How the order is found
Every place has coordinates. The tool calculates the straight-line distance between each pair and then tests the possible visiting orders using dynamic programming (the Held-Karp method). With up to 10 destinations that is fast and gives the genuinely shortest order by straight-line distance.
For a round trip the route returns to your start. For a one way trip it finishes wherever the best route ends, so the last stop may not be the one you expected. If you need a fixed finish, tick it and compare with a round trip result.
Kilometres, road estimate and days
Total kilometres is the sum of straight-line legs. The road estimate multiplies that by 1.3, and the range shown uses 1.25 to 1.35. Mountain roads, river crossings and the choice between motorway and local roads move the real distance in both directions, so it is a planning figure only.
Suggested days follow a simple rule: the larger of the road kilometres divided by 250, and the number of stops divided by two, never fewer than one. The driving hours shown assume an average of 70 km/h on mixed roads. Add days if you want hikes, spas or long castle visits at each stop.
Driving in Slovakia
Motorways and expressways need an electronic vignette, which you buy before entering them. Read the Slovakia vignette and driving in Slovakia guides before you set off, including winter equipment rules and mountain road closures. For a full itinerary idea, see the Slovakia road trip guide.
Each destination in the result links to a Taply page when one exists, for example Spiš Castle, Banská Štiavnica or Košice.
Limits
The optimizer only minimises distance. It ignores opening hours, traffic, tolls, ferry or pass closures and your own priorities, such as seeing the Tatras in good weather. Places such as caves and castles have closing days, so check them first.
Google Maps accepts about nine waypoints in a link on most devices. With a start and 10 destinations the link can be at the edge of that, so if a stop is dropped, open the route and add it by hand.
Choosing destinations
A good road trip mixes a few anchors with short detours. Anchors might be Bratislava, Banská Štiavnica, the Tatras and Košice. Detours could be Čičmany, Vlkolinec or Súľov, each of which adds only a short drive off the main line but a very different feel. Because the optimizer works from straight lines, a stop that sits behind a mountain range can be much further by road than the estimate suggests, so check the Google Maps link before committing.
Road conditions matter too. Mountain roads in the High Tatras and Low Tatras can be slow and winter driving needs proper tyres. The car rental guide explains picking up and dropping off, and a one-way trip often costs extra if you return the car elsewhere.
Questions
Is the road distance exact?
No. It is the straight line multiplied by 1.3 and shown as a range of 1.25 to 1.35. Use the Google Maps link for the real figure.
How many stops can I choose?
Up to 10 destinations plus the start city. More would make the exact calculation slow in a browser.
How are the suggested days worked out?
It is the larger of road kilometres divided by 250 and stops divided by two, with a minimum of one day. It is a simple rule of thumb.
What is the difference between round trip and one way?
A round trip returns to the start city. A one way trip ends at whichever stop gives the shortest total distance.
Do I need a vignette?
Yes for motorways and expressways in Slovakia. Buy the electronic vignette before using them, as explained in the vignette guide.
