High Tatras Hike Finder: Find a Trail by Level, Time and Season

This finder lists well-known High Tatras hikes that match your difficulty, time limit, start village, season and whether you walk with children. It also marks which routes lie above the mountain huts, where marked trails are closed from 1 November to 15 June.

Times are rough round-trip figures. Where our guides state a time it is labelled, and otherwise the range is marked approximate, so check the trail signs on the day.

How the finder works

Pick the filters that matter and the list updates at once. Results are sorted from the easiest and shortest walk to the hardest. The time limit compares against the shortest realistic round trip, so a route can appear even if a slow group needs longer. Read the time range on each card and add rest stops, especially with children.

The list covers eleven routes: the Štrbské Pleso lake loop, Hrebienok and the Studenovodské waterfalls, Bilíkova chata, the Skalnaté pleso area, Popradské pleso, Zelené pleso, Téryho chata, Zbojnícka chata, Chata pod Rysmi, Kriváň and Rysy. It is a shortlist of popular choices, not every trail in the park.

Where the numbers come from

Times and heights marked as coming from our page are taken from the linked Taply guide: Rysy at about 8.5 to 9 hours return from Štrbské Pleso, Popradské pleso at about 4 km one way from Štrbské Pleso and a lake height of about 1,494 m, Kriváň at 2,494 m with about 1,150 m of climbing on the shortest route, Hrebienok at about 1,285 m and Skalnaté pleso at about 1,751 m.

For the lake loop, the hut walks and the Chata pod Rysmi route the ranges are rough estimates and are labelled approximate. Trail signs in the park give walking times in hours and minutes, and those are the figures to trust. Add extra time for photos, snacks and slower walkers. Children, heavy packs and wet rock can double a guidebook estimate.

Closures above the huts

The Tatra National Park (TANAP) closes marked trails above the mountain huts from 1 November to 15 June each year. Rysy, Kriváň and the Chata pod Rysmi route fall under this closure, and the hut at Chata pod Rysmi itself closes in winter. Walks below the huts, such as the lake loop, Hrebienok and Popradské pleso, usually stay open but can be icy.

Routes to huts such as Téryho chata, Zbojnícka chata and Zelené pleso are marked as conditions vary. Whether they are open depends on snow, avalanche risk and TANAP decisions, so check the park website before you go. The trail season checker shows whether the closure applies on a given date.

Choosing by difficulty

Easy walks are the lake loop, the Hrebienok waterfalls and the Skalnaté pleso area. They suit most people with ordinary shoes that grip. Moderate hikes such as Popradské pleso and the hut routes take several hours with real height gain, rocky steps and some steep stretches. Hard routes are Chata pod Rysmi, Kriváň and Rysy: long days with exposed sections, chains on Rysy and steep rock on the last 350 m of Kriváň. Do not attempt them without experience, boots and a good forecast.

Tips for a safe day

Start early, because afternoon storms are common above the tree line. Carry a rain jacket, a warm layer, water, snacks and an offline map. Mountain rescue is 18 300 and 112 also works. Set a turn-back time before you leave and keep to it. For hut stops, carry cash, since cards are not reliable at remote huts. Read hiking insurance for the High Tatras and how the mountain huts work before a longer route.
