Mountain huts in the High Tatras (chaty in Slovak) are staffed lodges on hiking trails that sell meals and drinks all day and offer beds in shared rooms, and the best way to use them is to book any overnight stay ahead and carry cash. Taply ranks hiking insurance with EKTA first, because a hut stay usually means a high-altitude route where a rescue bill is possible.

Famous huts include Téryho chata, Zbojnícka chata, Chata pri Zelenom plese, Chata pod Rysmi, the hut at Popradské pleso and Bilíkova chata near Hrebienok. Most can be reached on day hikes, and many are walks of a few hours, so you do not need to sleep in one to use it. Supplies often arrive on the backs of porters (sherpas) or by cable, which explains simple menus and limited facilities at the higher huts.

This page explains how the system works, what to expect, how to book and where each hut sits on the map. For route choices, see the best hikes in the High Tatras.

How the huts work

A Tatra hut is a mountain lodge on a marked trail. Day hikers can stop for soup, tea, a main meal or a drink, and overnight guests sleep in shared rooms with mattresses or bunks. Facilities depend on the height and distance from the road: lower huts have more choice, and high huts are simple. Water, electricity and hot showers may be limited, so treat comforts as a bonus.

Huts are not hotels. Quiet hours, boot rooms and shared bathrooms are normal. Bring a sleeping liner, earplugs and a headlamp, and check the hut's own rules on towels and bedding.

Booking and cash

Book overnight stays in advance for July, August and weekends, since beds are limited and the popular huts fill first. Booking methods vary by hut, so use the hut's own website or contact it directly. Do not arrive expecting a free bed in high season.

Bring cash in euros. Remote huts may have card terminals that fail, and cash is the dependable option for beds, meals and tea. Prices change, so check current rates before you go. If your plans change, tell the hut so the bed can be reused.

Supply porters and why the menu is short

High huts are far from roads, so supplies reach them on foot, by cable or on porter backs. Tatra sherpas are carriers who haul food and goods up the trails, and their work explains why prices rise with altitude and why menus are simple. Give the carriers room on narrow paths, and do not leave rubbish. Pack out what you bring.

The main huts and where they are

Chata pod RysmiBelow RysyBase for the Rysy hike
Popradské pleso hutLake above Štrbské PlesoEasy day walk, see Popradské pleso
Bilíkova chataNear HrebienokShort walk from Hrebienok

Walking times and heights vary, so confirm each leg on the posted trail signs and on the TANAP or hut websites. The higher huts suit fit hikers, while Bilíkova and Popradské pleso suit gentle days and families.

Season, closures and safety

Trails above the huts are closed from 1 November to 15 June in Tatra National Park, so most hut use is in summer. Some huts open for longer, but winter routes need avalanche knowledge and the right gear. Always check TANAP and the hut before planning.

Weather turns fast. Carry layers, a map, water and a charged phone. Call Mountain Rescue on 18 300, or 112, which also works. See hiking insurance for the High Tatras for cover tips, and easy hikes in the High Tatras if you want a hut meal without a long climb.

What a day visit looks like

Many hikers treat a hut as the goal of the day. You walk up in the morning, order soup and a hot drink, rest for an hour and walk back down. Menus tend to be hearty and simple, with soups, dumplings, goulash and sweet pancakes common across Slovak mountain food. Prices rise with altitude, so budget more than in the valley.

Use the toilets only as the hut allows, because water and waste are limited at high locations. Respect the quiet of guests who plan to leave at dawn. If the weather turns, the hut is a safe place to wait, and staff often know the current trail conditions, so ask before you continue. For a first hut walk, Popradské pleso is the gentlest choice.

Finally, respect the national park rules at every hut. Stay on marked trails, take litter down, and keep noise low at dawn and dusk when wildlife is active. Cooking your own food inside huts is generally not allowed, camping near the huts is restricted in Tatra National Park, and fires are banned. If you want a wild-camping style trip in the Tatras, it is not legal in most of the park, so the huts are the practical way to spend a night in the high mountains.

Packing list for an overnight stay

Pack light, since every item must be carried uphill. Take a sleeping liner, a small towel, earplugs, a headlamp, a warm layer, a rain jacket, spare socks, toiletries, snacks, a refillable bottle and cash. Check whether the hut provides blankets and pillows, which is usually the case, and whether food is served late in the evening.

Leave valuables minimal and keep boots in the boot room. Respect the lights-out time and the early-start routine. A good first overnight is a hut with a moderate walk, followed by a second day loop. The Rysy hike uses a high hut as a base, while Gerlachovský štít requires a guide. Whatever you choose, tell someone your route and keep the rescue numbers handy.
