With one day in the High Tatras, the best plan in summer is the walk from Štrbské Pleso to Popradské pleso, about 4 km each way, while the Hrebienok funicular and the Studenovodské waterfalls is the best all-weather choice and the cable car to Lomnický štít (2,634 m) is the best view on a clear day. A pre-booked transfer through intui.travel is Taply's first pick for reaching the right resort without hunting for connections. All three plans start from the Tatra Electric Railway, so you can pick the plan the evening before based on the forecast.
This guide assumes you are already in Poprad or a Tatras resort. If you are coming from afar, read the day trip from Bratislava first, because the journey changes what fits. For longer stays, see High Tatras in 3 days.
Top picks at a glance
Key takeaways
- Pick the plan by forecast: lake walk in good weather, Hrebienok in poor, Lomnický štít only on clear days.
- Higher trails are closed from 1 November to 15 June, so check TANAP in spring and autumn.
- The Lomnický štít cable car is weather-dependent and has limited time at the top.
- The Tatra Electric Railway connects all three bases, so you can change plans on the day.
- Start early. Mountain weather and crowds both favour the morning.

Choose your plan
| Plan | Best season | Effort | Weather needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| A: Štrbské Pleso to Popradské pleso | June to October | Moderate, about 8 km round trip | Dry, stable |
| B: Hrebienok and waterfalls | All year (check funicular dates) | Easy | Works in mixed weather |
| C: Lomnický štít cable car | Summer main season | Easy, but weather dependent | Clear and calm |
The cable car to Lomnický štít normally closes for maintenance in May, and lifts can stop in strong wind at any time. Always check the operator site on the morning you go. See High Tatras cable cars for details.
Plan A: Štrbské Pleso and Popradské pleso
This is the classic walking day. Start early at Štrbské Pleso, walk the lake loop, then follow the red trail toward Popradské pleso, about 4 km each way. Spend an hour at the lake, see the Symbolic Cemetery, then return on the blue trail to the Popradské pleso train stop and ride back. Allow most of the day with lunch.
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| Morning | Train or transfer to Štrbské Pleso, lake loop |
| Late morning | Walk the red trail to Popradské pleso |
| Midday | Lunch at the hut or lake, short loop |
| Afternoon | Blue trail down to the train stop |
| Late afternoon | Train back to your base, check the last train |
Wear sturdy shoes and carry a jacket. If you want something harder, Rysy is a demanding summit route and does not fit a casual day.
Plan B: Hrebienok and the waterfalls
Take the Tatra Electric Railway to Starý Smokovec and the funicular up to Hrebienok, a plateau at about 1,285 m. From here, a forest path leads to the Studenovodské waterfalls, one of the best-known short outings in the High Tatras. Continue toward Tatranská Lomnica on foot or return to the funicular. This plan suits families, poor visibility and shoulder seasons. It is also the best fallback if wind closes the upper lifts. See High Tatras with kids.
Plan C: Lomnický štít by cable car
From Tatranská Lomnica a cable car reaches Skalnaté pleso, then a small cabin continues to the summit at 2,634 m, see Lomnický štít. Visitors can stay on the peak for about 50 minutes. Queues are longest in July and August, so buy timed tickets from the operator and go early. Take layers: it is cold at altitude even in summer. After the ride, use the afternoon for lunch in Tatranská Lomnica and, if time allows, a short train ride to Starý Smokovec for plan B. Skip this plan if you have heart or breathing problems unless you have medical advice.
By season
- Summer: all three plans work. Start early to avoid crowds, see High Tatras in summer.
- Autumn: lifts have maintenance breaks and higher trails close on 1 November. Plan B is safest.
- Winter: Štrbské Pleso and Tatranská Lomnica are ski areas. Lake walks are possible on cleared paths, see High Tatras in winter.
- Spring: snow can stay on paths until June. The cable car closes in May for maintenance.
Combining plans on a flexible day
The railway makes a two-part day possible. In the morning ride to Tatranská Lomnica and check the cable car queue and the forecast. If the summit is clear, go up. If not, take the short train to Starý Smokovec and switch to plan B before lunch. In the opposite case, start with Hrebienok when the morning is cloudy, and ride the cable car in the afternoon only if the sky opens. Do not stack plan A and plan C on one day, since each needs most of the day. If you have a second day, keep plan B for the first afternoon and save the lake walk or the summit for the day with the best forecast, which is far better than forcing the plan on a grey morning.
What to pack and when to start
- Layers, a windproof jacket and a hat, even in July.
- Sturdy shoes with grip. Trainers are fine for Hrebienok, but not for the lake trails after rain.
- Water, a snack and some cash for huts.
- Sun cream and sunglasses, since UV is strong at altitude.
- A paper or offline map, and the last train time written down.
Start by 8:00 in summer. Clouds tend to build in the afternoon, and car parks and lift queues fill by late morning. Short winter days need an even earlier start.
Money and lunch
Mountain huts and lift-side restaurants cost more than the valley, so a simple lunch at the lake or in the village before the walk can save money. Check menu prices before you sit down. Card payment is common in resorts, but huts may prefer cash, see money in Slovakia. For a stay of more than one day, things to do in the High Tatras lists further outings.
Getting around in one day
The Tatra Electric Railway is the best tool. It links the three bases, so you can start with one plan and change to another if the weather turns, see the railway guide. Arriving from Poprad Airport is covered in Poprad Airport to the High Tatras. For where to sleep, read where to stay. Bring cash for huts and small kiosks, and write down the last train back before you set off.
Safety in one line
Tell someone your route, carry water, layers and a charged phone, and turn back if clouds drop or thunder starts. The emergency number is 112. See best hikes in the High Tatras for harder routes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best thing to do in the High Tatras in one day?
In summer, walk from Štrbské Pleso to Popradské pleso, about 4 km each way. In poor weather, ride the Hrebienok funicular and walk to the waterfalls. On a clear day, take the cable car to Lomnický štít.
Can I go up Lomnický štít in one day?
Yes, by cable car from Tatranská Lomnica, but only in good weather and outside maintenance periods. Visitors can stay on the peak for about 50 minutes.
Is Lomnický štít open all year?
Not always. The cable car normally closes for maintenance in May, and wind can stop it on any day. Check the operator website on the morning you go.
How long is the walk to Popradské pleso?
About 4 km one way from Štrbské Pleso on a marked trail, so plan roughly half a day with a stop at the lake.
Can I visit the High Tatras without a car for one day?
Yes. The Tatra Electric Railway connects Poprad and the main resorts, and all three plans start at a train stop.
Are the trails open in winter?
Higher trails are closed from 1 November to 15 June. Lower paths and ski areas are open, subject to snow and operator rules.
