Lomnický štít is a 2,634 metre peak in the High Tatras that you can reach by cable car from Tatranská Lomnica, and the simplest way to plan the day is to book tickets in advance and arrange a Kiwitaxi transfer if you arrive by air. Taply ranks a pre-booked transfer first because the cable car is the main draw and getting to the base on time matters.
The ride is done in stages, with a stop at Skalnaté pleso, and the summit offers views across the Tatras, the Spiš plains and, on clear days, far beyond. Weather decides everything here.
This page explains the basics, from tickets to clothing.

How the cable car works
The journey starts at Tatranská Lomnica. A first section takes you up to Štart and then to Skalnaté pleso, a mountain lake area at around 1,750 metres with a restaurant and observatory. A second, smaller cabin continues to the summit of Lomnický štít. Time spent at the very top is usually limited, and operators set rules about group sizes.
Details of timetable and tickets change by season, so always check the operator website for the current version.
When to go
Choose a day with a stable forecast. Early morning usually has the best visibility before clouds rise. Summer is the main season, and visits in spring and autumn depend on maintenance schedules and snow. Skiers use the Skalnaté pleso area in winter. See High Tatras in winter.
Many hiking trails above the treeline are closed from 1 November to 15 June. Check TANAP if you plan to walk anywhere near the summit area.
What to wear and bring
- Warm layers and a windproof jacket, even in July.
- Sunglasses and sun cream, since UV is strong at altitude.
- Sturdy shoes with grip.
- Water and a snack, because prices on the mountain are higher.
- A phone with a charged battery for photos and emergencies (112).
Altitude and health
At this height, some visitors feel breathless or dizzy. Move slowly, drink water, and skip the trip if you have heart or breathing conditions without medical advice. Insurance is worth considering for any mountain trip. EKTA is one provider to compare, and our travel insurance guide explains what to check.
Combine it with other sights
Spend the afternoon in Tatranská Lomnica or take the train to Starý Smokovec for Hrebienok. For more ideas see things to do in the High Tatras and the High Tatras guide.
Tickets and queues
Cable car tickets for popular periods sell in advance, and the lower station can be busy in July and August. Arrive with time to spare, and have your booking on your phone. Prices and conditions change, so check the official operator site for current fares, group rules and any restrictions for children.
If the summit is closed because of wind or maintenance, there are usually alternatives such as the Skalnaté pleso area, which still gives views and walks. Ask at the ticket office what is running that day before you buy.
Getting to Tatranská Lomnica
Tatranská Lomnica is the eastern resort of the High Tatras. It is linked to Poprad by the Tatra Electric Railway, and by road it takes about half an hour or a little more from Poprad-Tatry airport. Parking near the lower station is limited and paid, so a transfer or train is easier on busy days. For route planning from other cities, see Bratislava to the High Tatras and Košice to the High Tatras.
