Tipping calculator for Slovakia

This calculator suggests how much to tip in Slovakia based on your bill, the quality of service and where you are, such as a restaurant, cafe, bar, taxi, tour or hotel. It gives a tip range and a rounded total you can simply say when you pay.

Tipping in Slovakia is a habit, not a rule, so the ranges are common practice rather than official rates.

Tipping in Slovakia at a glance

In a sit-down restaurant, rounding up or adding around 5 to 10 percent for good service is a common habit. In cafes and bars, rounding up the total is usual. In taxis, rounding up the fare is enough. Hotel porters and housekeeping get a euro or two if you wish, and a small tip for a good tour guide is welcome. Nobody expects the high percentages common in some other countries.

How to tip when you pay

Say the total you want to pay when the server brings the bill or the card terminal. If the bill is 23.60 and you want to pay 25, say 25 and the server keeps the difference. That is easier than leaving coins on the table afterwards. If you pay by card, say the total before you tap, because many terminals cannot add a tip afterwards.

Check the bill for a service charge first, and do not tip twice. The calculator has a box for that case. For more detail read tipping in Slovakia.

How the calculator rounds

The tip range uses a percentage band for each service quality: for example 0 to 5 percent for OK service, 5 to 8 for good service and 8 to 10 for excellent service in a restaurant. The suggested total is then rounded to a whole euro for normal bills, half a euro for small bills under 10 euro, and five euro for large bills of 150 or more, so you can say one clean number.

Hotel tips are fixed small amounts, not percentages, so the bill amount does not change them.

Limits

These are common habits that vary by place and person, and they are not rules or official rates. If service was poor, you can leave nothing or just round to the nearest euro. For more local etiquette see Slovakia travel tips and money in Slovakia.

Examples

A dinner bill of 40 euro with good service falls in a band of 5 to 8 percent, which is a tip of 2 to 3.20 euro. Saying 43 or 44 when you pay is a clean, friendly result. A coffee and cake for 6.20 euro with OK service is covered by saying 6.50. A taxi fare of 18 euro with good service rounds to 19 or 20.

For a guided walking tour that is paid by tips, decide on a figure in advance. Many travellers give a few euros per person, or more for an excellent guide, and the percentage bands above are a reasonable guide when the tour has a stated price. If you book a tour online, read the booking page, because some tours already include the guide's gratuity.

In large groups, check for an automatic service charge before adding your own. It is common for the bill to say so clearly, and then an extra tip is optional.
