The most straightforward way from Budapest Airport to Nitra is a private transfer, and GetTransfer is our first pick because for a cross-border route with few public options, comparing driver offers shows the real price range. You travel from Hungary to Slovakia over the Danube, and there is normally no border check since both countries are in Schengen.
Public transport is thinner than people expect. Budapest Airport is about 16 km southeast of the centre, so a public chain starts with a ride into town, and Nitra is not on the main Bratislava to Žilina railway. There is no obvious single-ticket rail link, so a transfer is the common answer.
This page lays out the realistic options and the points where plans go wrong: the airport terminal, the Danube crossing, and a late arrival.
Top picks at a glance
Key takeaways
- The airport is about 16 km southeast of Budapest centre, so a public chain starts with a trip into the city.
- Hungary and Slovakia share a Schengen border; Wikipedia notes minimal or no controls.
- Nitra has no direct main-line rail link from Budapest, so a transfer is the simplest route.
- Distances and times here are estimates; check them in a map app for your date.

Public transport chain
Start at the airport. Wikipedia says Terminal 1 has a direct train of about 20 minutes to the city centre, while Terminal 2 needs an 8-minute bus to the station, and a 100E bus line also links the airport to the city. From Budapest you then need to reach Nitra. The Hungarian railway site mavcsoport.hu shows what runs to the Slovak border; on the Slovak side check zssk.sk. There are rail crossings such as Szob to Chľaba, but Nitra would still need a further change. Coach operators such as FlixBus and RegioJet run various Central European routes; verify which of them stops in Nitra on your day. Count on a long day.
The road route
By road you drive out of Budapest and head toward Slovakia over the Danube. Wikipedia lists the Monostori Bridge at Komárom to Komárno and the Mária Valéria Bridge at Esztergom to Štúrovo among the road crossings. From the Slovak side you continue to Nitra. Which crossing a driver uses depends on traffic; ask them. Hungary and Slovakia both require e-vignettes on motorways; see our Slovak vignette guide.
Late arrivals
Cross-border public transport in the evening is the weakest link. If your flight lands after about 8 pm, a booked driver is far more reliable than hoping for a coach. Give the company your flight number, and if you take a Ryanair or Wizz flight, see flight delay compensation in case of a long delay.
Who Nitra suits
Nitra is a university city of around 75,000 with a hilltop castle complex, an old town and the Zobor hill at its edge. It suits visitors who want a quiet Slovak town, those visiting family, and people on a multi-country route through Budapest, Nitra and Bratislava. Read the Nitra guide. If your goal is the capital, see Budapest Airport to Bratislava.
Is it worth flying to Budapest for Nitra?
Only if the flight deal is clearly better. Vienna is closer to Bratislava and gives a more direct onward chain; Budapest Airport adds the Danube crossing and the lack of a rail link, so budget a long day. If you do choose Budapest, think of it as a two-country trip and add a night in Budapest, or consider continuing to Bratislava first, see Budapest to Bratislava.
Tips
- Note your terminal; Budapest has Terminals 1 and 2 and a driver needs the correct one.
- Hungary uses the forint but Slovakia uses the euro, so you need euros, not forints, once you arrive in Nitra.
- Keep your passport with you even though there is normally no control.
- Mobile roaming within the EU is generally included, but check your plan, see eSIM for Slovakia.
