The simplest way from Vienna Airport to Nitra is a pre-booked private transfer, and Welcome Pickups is our first pick: a driver meets you in arrivals and drives you straight to your address in Nitra, with no change in Bratislava. The route is about 57 km to Bratislava plus roughly 90 km on to Nitra, so expect somewhere around 150 km in total.
Nitra is the awkward one among Slovak cities near Vienna. It is not on the main Bratislava to Žilina railway, so there is no fast through train from the capital. Public transport works, but it means at least one change and a longer day than the map suggests.
This page covers the realistic chains, what each costs you in time, and who should simply book a car with a driver.

Airport bus to Bratislava, then onward by train or bus
CheapestBest for: Solo budget travellers
Take a coach or the train to Bratislava, then continue to Nitra by regional bus or by rail with a change. This is the budget chain, but it is two journeys and the second one is slower than a driver. Check current timetables on the operator sites before you rely on the last connection.

The realistic public transport chain
There are two stages. First, get from the airport to Bratislava: coaches, or the airport rail link toward Vienna and onward to Bratislava, both take roughly an hour to 90 minutes (see Vienna Airport to Bratislava). Second, get from Bratislava to Nitra. Nitra is not on the Bratislava to Žilina main line, which runs through Trnava, Piešťany and Trenčín. According to Wikipedia the city has a railway junction a short distance north of town linking it with Leopoldov and Topoľčany, so rail trips from Bratislava usually involve a change at a junction such as Leopoldov. Check the exact connection on zssk.sk.
Regional buses from Bratislava to Nitra are the other option and are often simpler with luggage. Whichever you choose, allow a full half-day if you rely on public transport, and do not plan a tight connection after a delayed flight.
Why a transfer makes more sense here than to Bratislava
For Bratislava, a coach is hard to beat on price. Nitra reverses that logic. A driver covers about 150 km without a change, while public transport adds a second ticket, a second wait and a second set of stairs with your bags. Splitting the price between three or four people closes most of the gap. If you arrive after about 9 pm, public transport onward from Bratislava may not exist at all, which also favours a booked driver.
Driving: route and costs
By road you head toward the Slovak border, pass Bratislava and continue on the expressway network toward Nitra. Slovakia requires an electronic vignette on motorways and expressways, which you can buy online before the trip, see our vignette guide. Austria has its own vignette rules on parts of the route near the airport, so ask the rental desk what the car already carries. Who Nitra suits
Nitra is one of the oldest towns in Slovakia, with a hilltop castle complex and cathedral, a pedestrian old town and Zobor hill right at the edge of the city. It has around 75,000 residents and two universities, so it feels like a working city rather than a resort. It suits visitors with family or business ties, students, history fans and anyone building a quieter route east of Bratislava. Read more in our Nitra guide. If you want a classic first trip, Bratislava and Trenčín are easier to reach by train.
Practical tips
- Book the transfer with your flight number so the driver sees delays.
- Take a payment card and some euros: regional buses sometimes sell tickets on board.
- If you arrive late and want to save money, sleep one night in Bratislava and continue in the morning.
- Carry a passport or ID card even though there is no border check; police can ask for it and rental firms insist on it.
- Your Nitra accommodation can often tell you the best bus stop, which is not always near the railway station.
