The simplest way from Budapest Airport to Bratislava is a pre-booked private transfer with Kiwitaxi, which takes you directly from arrivals to your Bratislava address without changing in Budapest. The distance is roughly 200 km and the drive takes about 2.5 hours, a little longer in traffic.

Budapest Ferenc Liszt Airport (BUD) is on the south-east side of Budapest, so a train from the city adds a transfer before you even start. Direct coaches run from the airport to Bratislava, which is the cheaper option if you are travelling light.

This page covers the airport leg specifically. If you are starting from central Budapest instead, see Budapest to Bratislava.

The airport itself

Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) is 16 km south-east of the city centre. Buses 100E and 200E serve it, and a rail link runs to the city, with about 20 minutes from Terminal 1 and an 8-minute bus ride from Terminal 2 to the train station. The official taxi partner is Főtaxi, with order desks at both arrivals exits. Wizz Air and Ryanair both have bases here, which is why many low-cost routes land at BUD.

Distance, time and route

Navigation apps usually send the drive west on the M1 motorway toward the Austrian border and on to Bratislava, so the route may pass through Austria. If you drive yourself, check which vignettes you need. Allow roughly 2.5 hours by car, with extra time if you leave during Friday afternoon or holiday traffic. Because both countries are in Schengen, there is no routine passport queue, although you should still carry ID.

Private transfer or coach?

A private transfer makes sense if you have two or more passengers, heavy bags or an early or late flight. The per-person price drops as the group grows. A coach is the budget choice and works well for solo travellers with one bag. Whichever you choose, book ahead in summer and around Christmas, when demand rises. If you fly on to Bratislava instead, see Bratislava Airport to the city centre.

Money and mobile data

Hungary uses the forint, so withdraw only what you need for snacks and tolls before you cross. Slovakia uses the euro. For data, an eSIM that covers both countries saves roaming costs, see eSIM for Slovakia.

Combining Budapest and Bratislava

If you have a day to spare, you can start in Bratislava and see Budapest as a day trip, see Budapest day trip from Bratislava. For the return, read Bratislava to Budapest.

If your flight is delayed

A delayed arrival can break a pre-booked pickup. Message your transfer company straight away. If the airline is at fault, you may be able to claim compensation, see flight delay compensation.

Step by step: the direct coach

  1. Check the FlixBus timetable. It lists about four departures a day, from 01:34 to 22:30.
  2. Book a seat online and note the Bratislava stop. The main terminus is Mlynské Nivy bus station, with extra stops in the city.
  3. Find the stop at the airport after landing. Ask in arrivals if signs are unclear.
  4. Allow about 3 h 10 for the ride, and check that onward transport in Bratislava suits your arrival time.

If you land after the last departure, a private transfer or the train from Budapest is the fallback. See Bratislava to Budapest for train details, which list arrival at Budapest-Nyugati.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a coach leaves right after landing. There are only a few departures a day.
  • Booking to the wrong Bratislava stop. Bratislava Airport is a separate FlixBus stop and takes much longer.
  • Not leaving buffer for baggage reclaim and immigration at BUD.
  • Taking a train to the city without checking which Budapest station your Bratislava train leaves from.

Who should skip the coach

Travellers landing after midnight, groups with heavy bags and anyone who needs a fixed arrival time should skip the coach. A pre-booked transfer fits these cases. If you only want Bratislava as a base, see cheap flights to Bratislava as a way to avoid the ground leg.
