This page is about January only: the empty-market feel after Christmas, the two public holidays at the start of the month, indoor plans and what to pack. For the wider season see Bratislava in winter, and for the month before see Bratislava in December.

January weather in Bratislava

MonthAverage highAverage lowPrecipitation
January3.1 °C−2.8 °C37.4 mm

These are long-term averages for the airport station (1991 to 2020 normals, sources WMO and SHMÚ). January sits below freezing at night and barely above it by day. Individual days can be milder or much colder, and snow is possible but not guaranteed. The full year is in Bratislava weather by month, and you can compare it with other cities in the weather comparer.

What is open and what has ended

The Christmas stalls on the main squares are gone or close very soon after the holidays, so January has none of the festive glow of December. See Bratislava Christmas markets if you wanted them, and plan for another month instead. Museums, galleries, cafes, wine bars and restaurants keep running, but some smaller places take a winter break after New Year, so check each one before you walk across town.

Seasonal services are the main gap. Danube boat trips are not in their main season, and hill and tower outings depend on conditions. The Kamzík chairlift and tower are weather dependent, so see Kamzík TV Tower and check that the lift is running on the day.

Public holidays in January

Two dates matter: 1 January, the Day of the Establishment of the Slovak Republic, and 6 January, Epiphany. On both days many shops are closed and public transport follows a reduced timetable. Restaurants in the centre often open but may serve a shorter menu. Buy groceries the day before and check sights online. The full list is on Slovakia public holidays, and you can test your dates in the holiday checker.

If you are here for New Year, read Bratislava New Year’s Eve. The first morning of the year is very quiet in the Old Town.

What to do in January: indoors

Treat the day as a loop of short outdoor walks and warm stops. Good indoor anchors are the museums, the castle exhibitions and a long lunch. See Bratislava museums for options and Bratislava on a rainy day for a full indoor plan. Wine bars and cafes are a better use of a freezing evening than a long walk, see wine tasting in Bratislava and Bratislava food and drink.

Thermal spas outside the city are an excellent January idea because hot outdoor pools feel better the colder it is, see thermal spas in Slovakia.

What to do in January: outdoors

Do the open-air sights in the middle of the day, when it is lightest and warmest. Bratislava Castle and the riverbank are windy, so keep the visit short and finish with a hot drink. The compact Old Town is easy in winter, see the Old Town walking tour. Frost on a clear day makes the views from the castle terrace and the best viewpoints sharper than in summer haze, but grey days flatten them.

Daylight is short, so check sunset in the sunrise and sunset tool and place the viewpoints before it.

Crowds and prices

January is one of the quietest months for visitors. After the New Year weekend, hotels in the centre tend to be easier to book and rooms often cost less than in December or in summer. Queues at the main sights are short. The trade-off is weather and shorter days, not availability. Check current prices before you book because they change from year to year, and see Bratislava on a budget if cost is your priority.

What to pack for January

Bring a warm coat, a hat, gloves, a scarf, thermal layers and waterproof boots with real grip, because cobbles can be icy. Pack a power bank, since the cold drains phone batteries quickly. A fuller list is in the Slovakia packing list, or build one with the packing list generator.

Day trips that suit January

Short days favour one nearby destination reached by train. Trnava is easy and mostly walkable, and the day trips from Bratislava by train page lists others. Vienna is close enough for a January day out, see Bratislava to Vienna. Skip long hill walks to ruins such as Devín Castle on icy days, or go only when paths are clear. If you want snow sports, the mountains are a separate trip, see skiing in Slovakia.

A short January day plan

  1. Late morning: coffee, then the Old Town on foot.
  2. Midday: Bratislava Castle while it is lightest.
  3. Afternoon: a museum or wine bar.
  4. Early evening: dinner, see Slovak food to try.

For a full schedule see Bratislava in one day.

Common January mistakes

The usual errors are expecting Christmas markets after the holidays, leaving the castle until dusk, wearing shoes without grip and assuming that a small cafe or gallery is open on 1 or 6 January. Another is booking a tightly packed schedule: with short days and cold air, two or three well-chosen stops beat six rushed ones. See first time in Slovakia mistakes and Slovakia travel tips.

January compared with February

January averages 3.1 °C by day and 37.4 mm of precipitation. February is slightly warmer at 5.8 °C and drier at 32.9 mm, so if you can choose, February is a little kinder, see Bratislava in February. Use the best time to visit finder if you are deciding between months.
