Bratislava layover planner
This planner works out how many usable hours you have in Bratislava during a layover at Bratislava (BTS) or Vienna (VIE) airport, and tells you whether going into town is worthwhile.
It subtracts check-in and security time, time after landing, transfers both ways and, if needed, baggage handling. The buffers are assumptions and you can change every one of them.
The assumptions
Usable time is the gap between landing and departure minus five things: the buffer before departure, the buffer after landing, the transfer into town, the transfer back, and any baggage time. Defaults for Bratislava Airport are about 2 hours before departure (2.5 hours for a non-Schengen flight), 45 minutes after landing and a 25 minute transfer each way.
For Vienna Airport the defaults are 2.5 hours before departure (3 hours non-Schengen), 1 hour after landing and about 1 hour each way to Bratislava by train or bus. Checked bags add 45 minutes by default. These are cautious planning figures, not official airport rules. Change any of them in the form to match your airline and your appetite for risk.
What the verdict means
Under 60 usable minutes: stay at the airport, because one delayed bus ruins the plan. 60 to 150 minutes: a short Old Town loop is possible but tight. 150 to 300 minutes: comfortable for the Old Town plus one major sight and lunch. Over 300 minutes: you can follow a near full day plan.
Treat the result as a margin, not a target. Plan to be back at the airport at the time shown, and remember that arriving late for check-in is the usual way layovers go wrong.
Getting between the airport and the centre
From Bratislava Airport the bus and taxi trip to the centre is short, see Bratislava Airport to the city centre. From Vienna Airport, direct buses and trains reach Bratislava in about an hour, see Vienna Airport to Bratislava.
The Bratislava layover guide has sample plans for different lengths, and luggage storage in Bratislava covers where to leave bags while you explore.
Limits and rules to check
The tool assumes arrival and departure times are in the same local time zone and the same day-to-day schedule. It cannot know about delays, border controls on a non-Schengen arrival, or separate-ticket risk. If your tickets are separate and you miss the second flight, the second airline is not obliged to rebook you.
Some airlines also close bag drop and gates earlier than the default, so use the strictest time on your booking. If you arrive from outside the Schengen area, allow extra for passport control and raise the after-landing buffer.
Sample plans by usable time
About 90 minutes: take the shortest ride in, walk from the Main Square past Michael's Gate, have a coffee, and head back. About 3 hours: add the castle exterior and the views over the Danube, or a sit-down lunch of Slovak dishes. About 5 hours or more: follow the one-day outline, including the castle, the Blue Church and the river, with a margin for slow trains.
Always check the last reliable departure time of the bus or train back to the airport, particularly in the evening. If your arrival is after about 21:00, many places are closed and the sensible choice is often a quiet evening drink near the Main Square, if the time allows, or staying airside.
Questions
Can I leave the airport on a layover?
Usually yes if you travel on separate tickets or have collected your bags. If your bags are checked through, you normally cannot collect them in Bratislava, so travel with carry-on only.
How long is the transfer between airport and Bratislava?
About 25 minutes from Bratislava Airport and about an hour from Vienna Airport. These are planning defaults you can change.
Why a bigger buffer for non-Schengen flights?
Non-Schengen departures involve passport control, and airlines often close check-in earlier, so the default adds 30 minutes.
How many hours do I need to see Bratislava?
Two to three usable hours cover the Old Town highlights. Five or more allow the castle and a relaxed lunch.
What if my flight is delayed?
Re-enter the new times. A delayed arrival shrinks the usable time, and a delayed departure adds buffer, but do not extend your trip beyond what your original gate time allows.
