Slovakia Castle Finder: Pick a Castle by Region, Condition and Access
This finder filters 16 Slovak castles by region, whether you want a furnished museum or a ruin, whether you can reach it without a car, whether it suits children and whether it is near Bratislava. Each result links to our guide where one exists.
Opening hours and tour rules change by season, and many castles close one weekday, so check the official site before you go.
How to read the results
Condition separates castles with a furnished or exhibited interior from ruins you walk through. Spiš, Devín, Beckov and Čachtice are ruins. Bojnice, Červený Kameň, Orava and Bratislava Castle have visitable interiors. Stará Ľubovňa is partly ruin and partly rebuilt, so it appears under both choices when you filter for ruins. Kežmarok Castle appears only when you leave condition on Any, because our guides do not describe its state.
Regions follow the way our guides group castles: the west runs from Bratislava to Trenčín, the centre and north covers Bojnice, Strečno, Orava and Zvolen, and the east covers the Spiš region and the Košice area.
Without a car
Bratislava Castle on foot and Trenčín Castle by main-line train are the easiest. Devín works by city bus line 29. Orava needs a train to Oravský Podzámok and a steep uphill walk, Bojnice needs a train to Prievidza and a local bus, Spiš needs a bus from Spišská Nová Ves or Poprad, and Červený Kameň is the hardest. Castles our transport guides do not cover are not offered under the car-free filter. See castles in Slovakia without a car.
With children
Bojnice is the usual family choice, with guided interior tours, a park and the oldest zoo in Slovakia nearby. Large ruins such as Spiš and Devín give children room to explore, but paths are uneven and edges are not always fenced. Červený Kameň has many steps and suits older children, though it offers a short children's tour. Orava is steep and poor with strollers. Pick one castle a day, because children tire quickly on hill paths.
Special cases and which castle for whom
Krásna Hôrka was damaged by a grass fire in March 2012, which destroyed the roof and part of the castle, although most of the exhibits survived. We could not confirm its current visiting status, so check its official site before you plan a trip. Smolenice is a rebuilt 20th-century castle used as a conference centre, with public access listed as July and August only. Červený Kameň is visited by guided tour only, with English tours in July and August.
For fairytale looks and an interior tour, choose Bojnice. For ruins with space to roam, choose Spiš, one of the largest castle sites in Central Europe. For a short city visit, pick Bratislava Castle or Devín. For drama and photography, Orava stands on a steep rock above the river. For a half day from Bratislava, Červený Kameň is close, though the interior needs a booked tour. If you are short on time, choose one interior castle and one ruin rather than trying to see them all.
Planning a route
Group castles by region and limit yourself to one or two a day. Check the last bus or train back before you climb. Wear shoes with grip on cobbles and ruins. For longer routes, read castles in Slovakia and castles near Bratislava. Spiš is open mainly from April to October and is generally closed in winter.
The west holds Bratislava, Devín, Červený Kameň, Trenčín and Beckov, and a day with a car can link Trenčín and Beckov. The centre and north holds Bojnice, Strečno and Orava, which fit a two day loop with a night near Žilina. The east holds Spiš Castle and Levoča, which pair well with the High Tatras and Košice. Keep driving days short and check opening days first, because several interiors close on Mondays.
Questions
Which castle is nearest to Bratislava?
Bratislava Castle is in the centre and Devín, about 10 km from the Old Town, is the closest major ruin. Červený Kameň is about 30 km away.
Which castles can I visit without a car?
Bratislava Castle and Trenčín Castle are the easiest. Devín is reachable by city bus, and Bojnice and Orava need a local bus or a walk.
Which castle is best for children?
Bojnice, because of its interior tours and park. Large ruins such as Spiš and Devín also suit active children.
Is Krásna Hôrka open?
It was damaged by a fire in 2012. We could not confirm its current status, so check the official site first.
Are Slovak castles open in winter?
Some are, but many shorten their hours or close. Spiš is open mainly from April to October.
Why are some castles missing guide links?
A few castles, such as Čachtice, Zvolen and Stará Ľubovňa, have no page of their own, so the card links to the nearest overview.
