- All three on the Tatra Electric Railway
Choose Štrbské Pleso if you want a lake, easy walks and skiing at the western end of the line, and choose Tatranská Lomnica if the big cable car to Lomnický štít at 2,634 m is the reason you came. Starý Smokovec sits between them, at the junction of the Tatra Electric Railway, and suits most first-time visitors who want to change their mind from day to day.
The three resorts are connected by one railway, so the choice is about where you sleep, not which one you can visit. A pre-booked transfer with GetTransfer or Kiwitaxi gets you to the right one when you arrive with bags. For a wider comparison read where to stay in the High Tatras.

Štrbské Pleso
The resort lies on a glacial lake and is the western end of the main line. Hotels and sports facilities were largely rebuilt between 2007 and 2014, so the feel is modern. The flat path around the lake suits any age, and Popradské pleso is the classic longer walk. It is also a starting point for demanding climbs such as Rysy. Skiing is a main draw in winter. See Štrbské Pleso. Evenings are cool even in July.
Tatranská Lomnica
The cable car from here stops at Skalnaté pleso, at about 1,751 m, and continues on a separate suspension cable car to Lomnický štít at 2,634 m. It is weather dependent, and time at the top is limited. The lift has maintenance breaks, so check the operator before booking. See Tatranská Lomnica and Lomnický štít. If clouds hide the peak, Skalnaté pleso still offers walks.
Starý Smokovec as the middle option
Starý Smokovec is the junction of the railway and has the funicular to Hrebienok, at about 1,285 m. The Studenovodské waterfalls are an easy walk from there. The area has older architecture, including a Grand Hotel established in 1904. You can reach both Štrbské Pleso and Tatranská Lomnica by short train rides, and many visitors choose it for that reason. Read Hrebienok.
How to choose
- You ski: Štrbské Pleso, or Tatranská Lomnica if you prefer the lifts there. See skiing in Slovakia.
- You want one big view: Tatranská Lomnica.
- You walk gently: Starý Smokovec or Štrbské Pleso.
- You have kids: Starý Smokovec for the funicular, see High Tatras with kids.
- You are on a budget: Poprad, with daily rides to the mountains.
Practical tips
- Book early for July, August and Christmas weeks.
- Do not choose by the map alone. The line is short, but check last trains back.
- Pack warm clothes. Evenings are cold, even in summer.
- Check lift opening dates and wind closures before planning around them.
- For car-free tips read High Tatras without a car.
Hiking from each base
From Štrbské Pleso you can reach Popradské pleso, Solisko and the starts of demanding routes such as Rysy and Kriváň. From Tatranská Lomnica you can reach Skalnaté pleso and the cable car, plus paths towards other valleys. From Starý Smokovec the main easy outing is Hrebienok and the waterfalls. For a beginner walking list read easy hikes in the High Tatras.
Winter and summer
Both resorts work in winter, but Štrbské Pleso is the more compact ski base, while Tatranská Lomnica is built around its cable car. In summer, Štrbské Pleso offers lake walks and the others offer lift days. Closures apply to high trails from 1 November to 15 June. See High Tatras in summer and High Tatras in winter.
Arriving
Poprad-Tatry is the rail hub, and the airport is nearby. A rack railway joins Štrba with Štrbské Pleso, which helps if you arrive on the main line. Check train times and station access with the operator, and see Poprad airport to the High Tatras.
Verdict
Choose Štrbské Pleso for a lake and ski holiday, Tatranská Lomnica for a cable car and views, and Starý Smokovec when you do not know yet. Because the railway links all three, the wrong choice is easy to repair with a day trip.
Food, evenings and prices
All three resorts have hotel restaurants and a few cafes, and meals cost more than in Poprad. Štrbské Pleso has a more modern, hotel-centred feel. Starý Smokovec has more small cafes and older buildings. Tatranská Lomnica is the quietest of the three in the evening. Prices rise at Christmas, in February and in July and August, so book early.
Families and accessibility
The lake path at Štrbské Pleso works with pushchairs, and the funicular at Starý Smokovec makes Hrebienok easy for small children. The Lomnický štít ride has limited cabin space and a time limit at the top, so plan around naps. See High Tatras with kids for more.
Weather and the cable car gamble
The Lomnický štít ride is the most weather-dependent attraction in the Tatras. Wind can close it, and cloud can hide the view from the top. Staying in Tatranská Lomnica lets you wait for a clear morning, while staying elsewhere means a train ride and a cost if the day goes wrong. Keep at least one spare day. Lake walks at Štrbské Pleso work in most conditions, which makes it the safer base for a short stay.
Short stays and long stays
For one or two nights, pick the resort that holds your main plan. For four or more nights, pick Starý Smokovec for the central position and visit the other two on day trips. A week allows a split stay: three nights in one resort, then a move along the line to the other. Luggage on the railway is easy if you pack light.
Mistakes to avoid
- Booking by name alone and not checking the lift status for your dates.
- Assuming restaurants are open in the shoulder season. Spring and late autumn can be quiet.
- Leaving the last day for the cable car, with no weather margin.
- Carrying heavy luggage up steps at small stations.
- Forgetting that evenings at altitude are cold even in July.
