# Slovakia in 5 days: Bratislava to Košice

Source: https://taply.sk/slovakia-itinerary-5-days/ (Taply, updated 2026-10-13)

The best 5-day Slovakia itinerary runs west to east: one night in Bratislava, one in Trenčín, two in the High Tatras, and a final day in Košice or Levoča. Taply ranks a rental car through QEEQ first for flexibility, but this route also works on trains alone, and the train legs are laid out below. Moving west to east lets you fly into Vienna or Bratislava and out of Košice, which avoids a long backtrack.
The plan has one long travel day, from the west of the country to the Tatras. Everything else is a short hop. If you have only three days, use the [3-day itinerary](https://taply.sk/slovakia-itinerary-3-days/). If you have a week, see the [7-day Slovakia itinerary](https://taply.sk/slovakia-itinerary-7-days/), which adds Banská Štiavnica and the Spiš region.

## Key points
- West to east works best: fly in at Bratislava or Vienna, out of Košice.
- Four nights: one in Bratislava, one in Trenčín, two in the High Tatras, then Košice on day five.
- The long leg is west Slovakia to the Tatras, roughly 3 to 5 hours.
- The Tatras days need flexibility for weather.
- Check ZSSK timetables for the exact trains before you book hotels.

## Quick facts
- Route: Bratislava, Trenčín, High Tatras, Košice
- Nights: 1 + 1 + 2, then Košice
- Longest leg: roughly 3 to 5 hours
- Car needed: No, but it helps

## What to book for a 5-day Slovakia trip, ranked
1. **Rental car with QEEQ** (best for Groups and families): QEEQ compares car rental offers. A car saves time between Trenčín, the Tatras and the Spiš region, where public transport is slow. One-way drops need checking in advance.
2. **Private transfer with Kiwitaxi** (best for Saving a travel day): Kiwitaxi offers private transfers between cities. Use one for the long ride from the west to the Tatras if you want to skip a day of train changes.
3. **Travel insurance with EKTA** (best for Hikers): Compare policies before you ride a cable car or walk above 1,500 m. Mountain rescue can be charged to the person rescued.
4. **eSIM with Airalo** (best for Independent travellers): An eSIM keeps maps and ticket apps working on the road, including in mountain resorts.
5. **Slovak trains (ZSSK)** (best for Budget travellers): ZSSK runs the main rail network and the Tatra Electric Railway. Rail is the budget choice for most legs of this route.

## The five days at a glance

Day | Stop | Main sights | Transport to next stop |
1 | Bratislava | Old Town, castle, Danube | Evening free |
2 | Bratislava, then Trenčín | Blue Church or a river walk, Trenčín Castle | Train, roughly 1.5 hours |
3 | Trenčín to the High Tatras | Travel day, Tatra resort walk | Train or car, roughly 3 hours or more |
4 | High Tatras | Lake walk or cable car | Tatra Electric Railway and train |
5 | Levoča or Košice | Old town, cathedral or Spiš Castle | Train, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours from Poprad to Košice |

All times are rough ranges. Confirm exact trains on the ZSSK site, and read [how to buy train tickets in Slovakia](https://taply.sk/how-to-buy-train-tickets-slovakia/) before booking.

## Day 1: Bratislava

Walk the Old Town in the morning, climb to [Bratislava Castle](https://taply.sk/bratislava-castle/) after lunch, and finish at the Danube. The route is in [Bratislava in one day](https://taply.sk/bratislava-in-one-day/). If you land at Vienna, see [Vienna Airport to Bratislava](https://taply.sk/vienna-airport-to-bratislava/). For where to sleep, see [where to stay in Bratislava](https://taply.sk/where-to-stay-in-bratislava/).

## Day 2: Bratislava to Trenčín

Use the morning for what you missed, for example the [Blue Church](https://taply.sk/blue-church-bratislava/), then take a train north-east to Trenčín in the afternoon. The ride is roughly 1.5 hours. Trenčín has a castle above the town and a compact centre, see [Trenčín](https://taply.sk/trencin/). It is a calmer stop after the capital and breaks the route into manageable pieces. With a car, you can add [Bojnice Castle](https://taply.sk/bojnice-castle/) before or after Trenčín, but not both in the same afternoon.

## Day 3: To the High Tatras

This is the travel day. From Trenčín by train, expect roughly 3 hours or more to Poprad-Tatry, possibly with a change at Žilina, see [Žilina](https://taply.sk/zilina/) for a coffee stop if you do. A car makes the leg shorter and lets you stop. After arriving, take the Tatra Electric Railway to your resort, see [the railway guide](https://taply.sk/tatra-electric-railway/), and keep the evening for a lake walk at [Štrbské Pleso](https://taply.sk/strbske-pleso/) or a short stroll in Starý Smokovec. Where to sleep is covered in [where to stay in the High Tatras](https://taply.sk/where-to-stay-in-the-high-tatras/).

## Day 4: A full day in the mountains

Look at the forecast the evening before and pick one of three plans.

- Clear and calm: the cable car to [Lomnický štít](https://taply.sk/lomnicky-stit/), 2,634 m, with limited time at the top.
- Good, but you prefer walking: Štrbské Pleso to [Popradské pleso](https://taply.sk/popradske-pleso/), about 4 km each way.
- Cloud or wind: the funicular to [Hrebienok](https://taply.sk/hrebienok/) and forest paths to the waterfalls.
For a single-day version, see [High Tatras in one day](https://taply.sk/high-tatras-in-one-day/). Higher trails are closed from 1 November to 15 June, so check TANAP before planning a summit hike.

## Day 5: Levoča or Košice

From Poprad, Levoča is about 30 to 45 minutes by road and has one of the best-preserved old towns in the country, see [Levoča](https://taply.sk/levoca/) and nearby [Spiš Castle](https://taply.sk/spis-castle/). For a final night with an airport, continue to Košice, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours from Poprad by train, see [Košice](https://taply.sk/kosice/) and [things to do in Košice](https://taply.sk/kosice-things-to-do/). Košice has its own airport, see [Košice Airport to the city centre](https://taply.sk/kosice-airport-to-city-centre/). If you must be back in Bratislava, do the Tatras to Bratislava leg by train and accept a long day.

## Without a car

Every stop is on the rail network, but plan carefully. Trenčín and Žilina are on the main line, the Tatras need a change at Poprad-Tatry or Štrba, and Levoča needs a bus from Spišská Nová Ves or a taxi. Pack light, since steps and short platform changes are normal. The guide to [trains in Slovakia](https://taply.sk/trains-in-slovakia/) explains classes and reservations.

## Where to sleep each night

Night | Base | Why |
1 | Bratislava Old Town | Walkable, near the station and the river |
2 | Trenčín | Compact, castle in view, on the main rail line |
3 and 4 | Starý Smokovec, Tatranská Lomnica or Štrbské Pleso | On the Tatra Electric Railway, with lifts nearby |
5 | Košice or Levoča | Košice for the airport, Levoča for the quiet old town |

Resorts in the Tatras fill up in July, August and over winter weekends, so book those two nights first and fit the rest around them. Keep cancellation terms flexible if you can, since mountain weather may force you to swap day 4 and day 5.

## Seasonal changes to the plan

In summer, the plan above works as written, and the high trails are open. In spring and late autumn, many lifts have maintenance breaks and the highest paths are closed, so lean on Hrebienok and the lake walks. In winter, replace day 4 with skiing or a snowy walk, see [High Tatras in winter](https://taply.sk/high-tatras-in-winter/), and add buffer time for the trip between the west and the Tatras, since snow can slow roads and trains. Christmas visitors can swap Trenčín for a market stop, see [Christmas markets in Slovakia](https://taply.sk/christmas-markets-in-slovakia/).

## A faster version if you are short of time

If you can only spare four days in practice, drop Trenčín. Spend two nights in Bratislava, travel to the Tatras on day 3 by a pre-booked transfer or an early train, spend day 4 in the mountains and fly out of Poprad-Tatry or Košice on day 5. This version has less sightseeing but fewer transfers. Compare flight routes first, see [flights to Košice](https://taply.sk/flights-to-kosice/) and [flights to Poprad-Tatry](https://taply.sk/flights-to-poprad-tatry/).

## Costs, pacing and what to cut

Slovakia is cheaper than Austria, but mountain lifts and resort meals are the expensive items, see [Slovakia travel cost](https://taply.sk/slovakia-travel-cost/). Keep a rest day in the plan: if you are tired after the Tatras, skip Levoča and take the train straight to Košice. If you are short of time, cut Trenčín and travel from Bratislava to the Tatras on day 2, as in [Bratislava to the High Tatras](https://taply.sk/bratislava-to-high-tatras/). Do not cut the Tatras buffer day. Weather there decides the whole trip.

## FAQ

**Is 5 days enough to see Slovakia?**
It is enough to see its highlights from west to east: Bratislava, a castle town, the High Tatras and one eastern city. It will not cover every region.

**What is the best order for a 5-day trip?**
Go west to east: Bratislava, Trenčín, High Tatras, then Levoča or Košice. This avoids backtracking and ends near Košice Airport.

**Can I do this itinerary by train?**
Yes. All main stops are on the rail network. Levoča needs a short bus or taxi, and the Tatra resorts use the Tatra Electric Railway from Poprad.

**How long is the train from Bratislava to the High Tatras?**
Roughly 4 hours to Poprad-Tatry on the fastest trains, longer with changes. Check the current timetable on the ZSSK site.

**Is it better to rent a car for 5 days?**
A car helps for castles, villages and Levoča. For Bratislava, Poprad and Košice you can manage without one.

**Where should I fly in and out?**
Fly into Bratislava or Vienna and out of Košice, or reverse it. Check flight options on the Košice and Poprad airport pages.
