# Poprad: Gateway to the High Tatras

Source: https://taply.sk/poprad/ (Taply, updated 2026-10-12)

Poprad is the transport hub of the High Tatras, and the simplest way to reach the mountain resorts from the airport or the station is a pre-booked Kiwitaxi transfer, which is Taply's top pick when you carry luggage. The town sits at the foot of the range at about 684 m above sea level and has around 48,000 residents.
Most visitors pass through on the way to Štrbské Pleso or Tatranská Lomnica, but the historic district of Spišská Sobota rewards a few hours, and the town is cheaper to sleep in than the resorts.

## What Poprad is

Poprad is a city in northeastern Slovakia, first documented in 1256. It grew after the Košice-Bohumín railway opened in 1871 and it is now a town of six districts: Staré Mesto, Spišská Sobota, Stráže, Veľká, Matejovce and Kvetnica. The airport has operated since 1938 and is described as the highest in Central Europe.
Modern Poprad is a working town with shopping centres and an aquapark, so it is more practical than pretty. The best part is Spišská Sobota.

## Spišská Sobota: the old district

Spišská Sobota was a separate town that joined Poprad after the Second World War. It received town privileges in 1271. The Church of St George, first built around 1273 and rebuilt in Gothic style in 1464, has altars by Master Paul of Levoča and a carved organ from 1662. The square around it has Renaissance and Baroque houses. Allow one to two hours. Church opening hours vary, so check at the door.
For the wider region see Levoča and Spiš Castle, both a short trip away.

## Poprad as a base for the High Tatras

The Tatra Electric Railway connects the town to Starý Smokovec, Tatranská Lomnica and Štrbské Pleso, so you can sleep in Poprad and hike in the mountains by day. Resort hotels cost more in peak months, so Poprad suits budget stays. The trade-off is the daily trip. If your goal is early starts on high trails, stay in the resorts. See things to do in the High Tatras and Tatranská Lomnica.

## Getting to Poprad

By air: see flights to Poprad-Tatry and Poprad airport to the High Tatras. By rail: from Bratislava the journey takes several hours, see Bratislava to the High Tatras. From Košice, see Košice to the High Tatras. By car, see car rental in Poprad.

## Seasons and trail rules

Summer is for hiking and winter for skiing, and both bring higher prices in the resorts. In Tatra National Park many higher trails are closed from 1 November to 15 June, so check the TANAP website before planning a hike from Poprad. Spring and autumn are quiet, and some mountain facilities are closed for maintenance.

## Practical tips

Book the first and last nights near the station if you travel by train. Buy local tickets for the mountain railway at the station or on the operator's site. Carry a rain jacket, as weather changes fast in the mountains. If you plan a hiking day, consider cover for mountain rescue, see our hiking insurance guide.

## Historic centre of Poprad

Poprad also has its own old district, centred on St Giles Square. It is lined mostly with 18th and 19th century houses, and the Early Gothic Catholic Church of St Giles dates from the late 13th century. The classicist Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity from the 19th century is nearby. The district is a good place for a coffee break between the station and the shops.

## How long to spend in Poprad

Time | What to do | Best for |
2 to 3 hours | Spišská Sobota and a coffee | Transfer between train and mountain |
Half day | Spišská Sobota, St Giles Square and a swim at AquaCity | Families and rainy weather |
One night | Arrive, walk the old districts, rail trip to the mountains next morning | Late flights and early starts |
Two or three nights | Day trips to the resorts, Kežmarok and Levoča | Budget travellers using Poprad as a base |

## Day trips from Poprad

Destination | Why go | Our page |
Starý Smokovec and Hrebienok | Funicular and easy walks | Hrebienok |
Tatranská Lomnica | Cable car toward Lomnický štít | Tatranská Lomnica |
Štrbské Pleso | Lake, hikes and skiing | Štrbské Pleso |

The Tatra Electric Railway starts at Poprad-Tatry station, so the mountain trips need no car. The line from Poprad to Štrbské Pleso is 29.1 km long, and the branch from Starý Smokovec to Tatranská Lomnica adds 5.9 km. See the railway guide and the cable car guide.

## Weather and what to pack

Poprad has a humid continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. Annual precipitation is around 637 mm, with about 74 snowy days a year, and the all-time low is minus 33.1 °C. That makes winter coats and sturdy boots essential from late autumn, while summer calls for layers and a rain jacket for the mountains. Check High Tatras weather by month before you pack, and High Tatras in winter if you visit in the cold season.

## Rainy day and family ideas

AquaCity Poprad is a water park and the obvious plan B when clouds sit on the mountains. Spišská Sobota and the old district of Poprad suit a slow walk with a coffee stop, though opening hours of churches and small venues vary, so check at the door. Families with young children often find Poprad easier than the resorts because everyday shops and restaurants are close together. For more pool options, see aquaparks in Slovakia and High Tatras with kids.

## Common mistakes

- Booking a hotel in Poprad and expecting to reach high trails early without checking the first train.
- Assuming the airport has many flights. Services are limited and seasonal, so check flights to Poprad-Tatry.
- Mixing up the main railway line and the Tatra Electric Railway. They are separate narrow and standard gauge lines with different trains.
- Arriving late at night without a booked transfer or a taxi plan.
- Skipping Spišská Sobota because you are rushing to the resorts.

## Sport and events

Poprad has a record as a winter sport host. It staged the 1994 Men's Ice Hockey World Championships, the 1999 Winter Universiade and the 2017 IIHF World U18 Championships, and the annual Tatra Cup hockey tournament is played here. It bid for the 2006 Winter Olympics, which went to Turin. If you visit in winter, it is worth checking whether a match fits your plans, since event dates change every year.

## Poprad compared with the resorts

Base | Best for | Trade-off |
Poprad | Budget, airport, station, shops | Daily ride to the mountains |
Starý Smokovec | Central rail junction and funicular to Hrebienok | Prices rise in peak weeks |
Tatranská Lomnica | Cable car toward Lomnický štít | Fewer shops |
Štrbské Pleso | Lake, hiking and skiing | Highest prices, quiet off season |
