# Lomnický štít: Cable Car, Tickets and Tips

Source: https://taply.sk/lomnicky-stit/ (Taply, updated 2026-10-13)

Lomnický štít is a 2,634 metre peak in the High Tatras that you can reach by cable car from Tatranská Lomnica, and the simplest way to plan the day is to book tickets in advance and arrange a Kiwitaxi transfer if you arrive by air. Taply ranks a pre-booked transfer first because the cable car is the main draw and getting to the base on time matters.
The ride is done in stages, with a stop at Skalnaté pleso, and the summit offers views across the Tatras, the Spiš plains and, on clear days, far beyond. Weather decides everything here.
This page explains the basics, from tickets to clothing.

## Key points
- Lomnický štít is about 2,634 metres high and reached by cable car from Tatranská Lomnica.
- Visibility changes quickly. Check the live weather and webcams before you go.
- Capacity is limited, so book online in peak seasons.
- It can be cold and windy at the top even in summer. Bring layers.
- Check the operator site for maintenance closures, which are common in some periods.

## Best ways to plan a Lomnický štít trip, ranked
1. **Private transfer with Kiwitaxi** (best for Visitors with a fixed ticket time): Kiwitaxi offers private transfers between cities and airports. A booked car from Poprad-Tatry airport or Košice to Tatranská Lomnica gets you to the lower station on time for your slot.
2. **Tatra Electric Railway and local trains** (best for Budget travellers): Trains from Poprad connect to Tatranská Lomnica. This is the budget route and simple if you stay in the Tatra resorts already.
3. **Tickets and tours on Klook** (best for Visitors without a car): Klook lists activities across Europe. Check there for guided trips in the Tatras if you prefer a group day with transport arranged.
4. **Rental car with QEEQ** (best for Flexible itineraries): Drive to Tatranská Lomnica and park near the lower station. QEEQ is a car rental comparison site for Slovakia.

## How the cable car works

The journey starts at Tatranská Lomnica. A first section takes you up to Štart and then to Skalnaté pleso, a mountain lake area at around 1,750 metres with a restaurant and observatory. A second, smaller cabin continues to the summit of Lomnický štít. Time spent at the very top is limited, at about 50 minutes for most visitors, and operators set rules about group sizes.
Details of timetable and tickets change by season, so always check the operator website for the current version.

## When to go

Choose a day with a stable forecast. Early morning usually has the best visibility before clouds rise. Summer is the main season, and visits in spring and autumn depend on maintenance schedules and snow. Skiers use the Skalnaté pleso area in winter. See High Tatras in winter.
Many hiking trails above the treeline are closed from 1 November to 15 June. Check TANAP if you plan to walk anywhere near the summit area.

## What to wear and bring

- Warm layers and a windproof jacket, even in July.
- Sunglasses and sun cream, since UV is strong at altitude.
- Sturdy shoes with grip.
- Water and a snack, because prices on the mountain are higher.
- A phone with a charged battery for photos and emergencies (112).

## Altitude and health

At this height, some visitors feel breathless or dizzy. Move slowly, drink water, and skip the trip if you have heart or breathing conditions without medical advice. Insurance is worth considering for any mountain trip. EKTA is one provider to compare, and our travel insurance guide explains what to check.

## Combine it with other sights

Spend the afternoon in Tatranská Lomnica or take the train to Starý Smokovec for Hrebienok. For more ideas see things to do in the High Tatras and the High Tatras guide.

## Tickets and queues

Cable car tickets for popular periods sell in advance, and the lower station can be busy in July and August. Arrive with time to spare, and have your booking on your phone. Prices and conditions change, so check the official operator site for current fares, group rules and any restrictions for children.
If the summit is closed because of wind or maintenance, there are usually alternatives such as the Skalnaté pleso area, which still gives views and walks. Ask at the ticket office what is running that day before you buy.

## Getting to Tatranská Lomnica

Tatranská Lomnica is the eastern resort of the High Tatras. It is linked to Poprad by the Tatra Electric Railway, and by road it takes about half an hour or a little more from Poprad-Tatry airport. Parking near the lower station is limited and paid, so a transfer or train is easier on busy days. For route planning from other cities, see Bratislava to the High Tatras and Košice to the High Tatras.

## A step-by-step plan for the day

- Check the forecast and the live webcams the evening before, and again at breakfast. If the summit is in cloud, move the trip to another day.
- Book a timed ticket online for a morning slot if the operator offers one for your date, or be at the lower station in Tatranská Lomnica well before opening on a busy day.
- Ride the first section to Skalnaté pleso. If the top is clear, continue to the summit. If not, stay on the lower level and walk around the lake area.
- At the top, use your time on the platforms first while the view is open, then warm up inside. Visitors who take the cable car normally have a limited stay at the summit, about 50 minutes, so do not spend it queuing for coffee.
- Come back down to Skalnaté pleso for a walk or a meal, then return to the resort in the afternoon, before the lower station gets crowded again.
Allow around half a day in total, and more in July and August when queues are longest. Operating hours and the last descent change by season, so check the official timetable for your date.

## What you can see and do at the summit

The summit is a small rocky platform with a mountain station, a weather station and a solar observatory that work all year round. There are viewing terraces at the top. The view covers the neighbouring peaks, the green Poprad valley and the Spiš plains to the south, and on very clear days it stretches across the border towards Poland. Photographs work best in the morning, when the air is cleanest.
The summit is not a hiking destination. There is no public marked trail to the top, and the climb from the saddle below is mountaineering that is allowed only with a certified mountain guide. For most visitors the cable car is the only practical way, which is why a missed or cancelled slot costs a whole day.

## Is Lomnický štít right for you?

If you | Then |

Have young children, are nervous about heights or dislike enclosed cabins | Try [Hrebienok](https://taply.sk/hrebienok/) first, which is a short funicular ride to gentle forest paths |
Prefer to see a different range | Read about [Chopok in the Low Tatras](https://taply.sk/chopok-low-tatras/) |

Visitors with heart, lung or balance problems should ask a doctor before going, since the altitude change in one day is large.

## Common mistakes

- Arriving without checking the weather. A closed or cloudy summit is the most common disappointment.
- Assuming the cable car runs all year. It is normally closed for annual maintenance for a few weeks, and spring and autumn dates change, so check before you plan a trip around it.
- Dressing for the valley. Temperatures at the top are far lower and the wind makes it feel colder. See the [Slovakia packing list](https://taply.sk/slovakia-packing-list/).
- Leaving the booking to the last minute in July and August.
- Planning a tight connection afterwards. Leave a buffer if you have a train or flight the same evening.
